Red Arrows in FS2004

Recommended Posts

Well, on day two of using the new sim, I'm pleased to report that the "Red Arrows" series put together by Mikko Maliniemi, Kari Virtanen and Mark Beaumont ALL work in FS2004, with full animations and no apparent problems. This includes the single FSDS aircraft, the full Diamond Nine in FSDS and the latest GMAX four, of course. You may get an error message the first time you load them up - I did, and hit NO to "disabling unsupported features" - and all ran just fine. There were no unsupported features. The aircraft look very crisp in the FS2004 colour tints and are, as usual, a blast to fly. You'll need to copy the gauges across, of course, as well as the aircraft themselves. Also, the smoke files between EFFECTS folders. Importantly, you will also need FSSound.dll in your MODULES folder.Put this in FS9.CFG if you haven't done so already:{OLDMODULES} ............ in square bracketsFSSound.dll=1The only glitch I have spotted to date is that in the newer of the two panels that ship with these babies, Eric Marciano's HUD needs a wee fix. It shows, but with a double image. You can disable it for the moment if it bothers you. I'll work on that with Eric and post a fix when I've sorted it. It works fine in the earlier panel. If the 'Reds' work, note that it also means that the single and formation 'Black Seahawks' and 'Saudi Hawks' will work as well. I've tested the single Seahawk but haven't gone through the others yet. But they're all the same model.Yippee! Fly Reds!Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg

Hi Fred,Regrettably, you'll no longer find them here if you don't have them already. For reasons of his own and unknown to me, Mikko Maliniemi withdrew all his files from the Avsim library some while back (over the Vinka business, it seems) and so most of the Hawk files disappeared accordingly. You'll still find them at flightsim and simviation.com, however, and at the Red Arrows official site at: http://www.raf.mod.uk/reds/flightsim.htmlMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontP.S. Huh ... just went there to check and they STILL don't have the last update online ... which funnily enough IS still at Avsim. That particular file is RED7UPD.ZIP but you need REDPACK7.ZIP first from elsewhere to set up the GMAX formation four.http://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg

Thanks Mark, I was scratching my head wondering where the red arrow files were.

The singleton and 4's are OK. Is there an update?Georgehttp://www.geo-davison.demon.co.uk/Me.jpg[/img://http://www.swiremariners.com/newlog....uk/Me.jpg[/img

Respectfully, George, read the README. The formation nine were pushing the limit of what can be achieved within a single model in FS, and some sacrifices had to be made. There is no gear, and no pilot figures. As you've spotted, the four and the single are fine.I will be posting the FS9 upgrade soon. It's been ready for a month, but I've been waiting on Eric Marciano to update his TCAS gauge for FSUIPC accreditation (which he has, so the gauge will run without the necessity of a registered version of FSUIPC). If he doesn't come through soon, though (he's a busy chap, doing all that lovely Airbus stuff) then I'll post the upgrade anyway and the TCAS can wait. To be honest, the real Reds don't have one anyway so it's a FS embellishment.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg

Hi Mark,I was so overwhelmed with the information in thr README, I missed the bit about the gear.Even without this, I am very impressed with the whole setup.I look forward to your FS9 upgrade.George

LOL ... it is a bit of a novel, sorry about that, but I know many have appreciated me taking the trouble to do it all in HTML with illustrations. I've done the same for the Black Seahawks and Saudi Hawks, incidentally, although it's basically the same information. Glad you're having fun, anyway. I was invited to the Reds' base a couple of months ago where I had fun too. It was a weird feeling to climb into a Hawk cockpit for the first time and to know every switch and gauge placement! The Electronics Engineer who was supposed to explain all the bits and pieces to me was a little overwhelmed at how much a drongo like me knew about his little pet, and went off in search of a copy of FS2002!The one thing that was totally new to me was the explanation of the exact workings of the ejector seat. Frightening. Don't try it at home, folks ... not something to do on a daily basis, that's for sure, if you wish to retain legs.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg
