Unsolicited email- Avsim you may have an email spider

Recommended Posts

Well my email address is hardly private knowledge but it appears as if the announcements are still going out.I understand Carmine's intentions but things just don't work like they used to anymore. We're all so tired of SPAM that anything out of the ordinary will raise the red flag. I get SPAM all day long and this one sure as heck felt like the same thing. If you want to invite me personally to your site, address the email to Jak Fearon, or even Jak. As soon as I see "Dear Avsim user" my finger goes immediately to the delete key and my browser comes right here to AVSIM to see what's up.Jak Fearonhow in the world?http://www.howintheworld.comhttp://www.howintheworld.com/hitw-images-misc/banner.jpg

Not sure if you can get here to read this anymore Carmine, so I'll reply to your spam the same way.I make my e-mail available in forums so that another user may send me an e-mail in regards to a posting that I have made. Not so that another user may include me in their canned mass mailing. Regardless of whether you did it one e-mail at a time or ran a spider or other such tool it is SPAM.Jim

Hello all,I to have had my email account run amuck with 17 emails from Carmine.I came here to see if there was some sort of information as to this being a legitimate site. I don't care for emails of this type. Usually means trouble. I too have a website dedicated to FS and such. From time to time when I have information to share such as tutorials and what not. I have found a single post in the appropriate forum generally is all that is needed to invite fellow enthusiast to stop by if they desire. Just recently I posted such a message about a new tutorial for Gmax. You know what? Not one harsh word or complaint. My logs show that traffic to my site amounted to almost 65% of my guest coming from Avsim. Gee, just one post. Who would have thought? In hindsight, I probably should have spammed everyone here and watched nothing happen traffic wise to my site and get flamed for doing it.Carmine, maybe next time you will think before you push that SEND button.FSEdge

I got it too, 8:47 CDT on June 10th. Let's catch this person. I already get enough crap in my e-mail, I don't want anymore but whatever, I'll just deal with it.If this is the price I have to pay to belong to something as great as AVSIM, well, it's a small price to pay :)

This guy just made an innocent mistake of trying to get some visitors to his site. Granted, this was totally the wrong way to do this, and he has paid the price by being banned. Another person was also banned "by association" of all things. I think maybe we are being too hard on the guy. There is a lengthy apology on their forum which is genuinely written, and will probably go unnoticed by many of you here. I am sure he would never had done this if he knew all this would be the result. And for the record, I have no idea who this guy is. I tried to put myself in his shoes, and thought about how I would feel if I were him. Losing the ability to visit Avsim and you people would greatly sadden me, particularly if I was banned for something I did without any intention of malice or annoyance. I think this sort of got blown out of proportion and this thread should probably be locked or removed since the modrators have clearly taken action in the situation. Please don't flame me for this, I love visiting here as I said, and I pretty much get along with everyone. I just try to examine the entire situation when I make a judgement call, that's all.Kindest Regards,http://www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/Us...de36834bc55.jpg

I have contacted FSFactory's webhosts, HostingCreations.Com (whose mailservers were also used to send the unsolicited bulk email), and requested that they invoke their Terms Of Service on the organization.AVSIM will not tolerate mass spamming, or unsolicited bulk email, of its users by ANY organization.Regards,--M

I agree with this sentiment. I really think Carmine was just doing what he thought was a natural thing, and since he came here to try and explain it that makes it seem even more like just a bad mistake.I honestly don't believe that his ISP should have been notified, or that he should have been banned. The punishment of getting slammed in the forums for going against the grain is pretty much enough. Everyone has broken netiquette at some time or another. If we all got slammed, banned, and canned for it there'd be no one left in the forums anymore.Jak Fearonhow in the world?http://www.howintheworld.comhttp://www.howintheworld.com/hitw-images-misc/banner.jpg

And we all have day-jobs to do as well !_________I think that would be wise of Tom. And I am sure you guys have been busy with this situation, Francois. I wouldn't have said anything about this normally because it doesn't concern me. I have never said a word to that Carmine guy before, but it appears to me that he really meant no harm. Probably just a bad mistake that he would never commit again. Try to look at it from his point of view. Lord knows people have been banned for much worse than this infraction! :-lolWow, he did annoy a lot of people though! It's a loooooooooong thread.Y'all admin people take a break if you're all worn down! Sincerely,http://www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/Us...de36834bc55.jpg

Carmine is history as far as this site is concerned; simple mistake, bad judgement, whatever. He violated in the extreme, our Terms of Use and that's it. Earl is another matter. He got caught up in the blast zone....

Here where I work, we have quite a few guidelines for global email marketing. Here is an interesting quote:"Special rules apply to the jurisdictions that do not premit the sending of UCE at all. As of February 2002, these jurisdictions are Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, and Italy"Essentially, if unsolicited commercial email was sent to anyone in these countries without an "opt-in" (which she did not recieve), it goes against their UCE laws. It's a very touchy subject because people are getting fed up with SPAM, and many laws are being written to punish those who use our resources (computers, ISP's, email accounts, even our electricity) to promote their message!

Maybe you think it was okay, but you haven't had to deal with the dozens of email that we have received in response. I am VERY not impressed.

Until we all see eye to eye on this, this type of thing is going to happen. And We'll never all see eye to eye. To those of us who think it was a harmless email attempt that could have been deleted without complaints, we are entitled to believe that. To the administrators and other members who are annoyed by the emails, I can understand this too. He did violate the conditions of visiting this forum and all issues have been resolved. But the ironic thing is that his interest in the hobby and his desire to promote it ended up biting him in the buttocks. Yet many of you still send your hate mail to him. Give him a break. He's gone, and you're only going to receive the junk mail you normally receive on a daily basis. It's truly tough when these types of things happen.Sincerely,http://www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/Us...de36834bc55.jpg
