How to maximize air traffic without killing PC performance?

Recommended Posts

I am very satisfied with the way FS2004 looks now. Performance is great and visuals are stunning with various tweaks (thanks to various folks here on that one!). But I remain frustrated with one item: I'd like more AI traffic, but can't seem to get it without damaging fluidity significantly.Since killing off FSAA and going to 1600x1200 res, performance is miles better. With all sliders set to full right or about 3/4 right, I get a steady 22 fps (my cap) at KLAX on takeoff; AI traffic is set to 50%. If I raise the traffic slider to 100%, frames fall by about a third, and an adverse visual effect in SPOT view and virtual cockpit view is noticeable right away. If I raise the slider to 66%, there is also a visual hit and not much more traffic. It seems to me, also, that even if AI traffic is not even visible after climbing out, if you set the traffic slider far right, frames fall right away. Why does this happen and can any of it be cured ? Appreciate any posts, thanks!JSDELL 82002.53Ghz1024MB RDRAMTi-46001600x1200x32 @ 85HznVidia 45.20 leaked driversTRINTRON 21" CRTDELL 19" LCD

My feeling on this is that although you dont see the traffic the CPU is still working on the flights and the ATC an all the radio calls you dont hear on all the freq.'s. "If an AI plane takes off near you but at a different field is there still a radio call...?" I think the answer is yes. What would be nice to see is a display like how we get frames per second would be a number of all AI that are currently being controlled while you fly. That way you could see how much traffic you can have before it starts to effect your preformance. I know theres a slider but lets face it if your flying in the middle of no where and you have AI at 50% and then go to New York and have AI at 50% its way more planes. So if you could set the actual amount of AI being controlled where once you hit your set target then FS starts dropping AI by which ones are the furthers from you. That way your CPU is always flying no more than a set amount of planes.NP

I wonder if the machine is still drawing out of sight planes as well? (within some predetermined range, even though out of line of sight) Have you tried any of the traffic addons like PAI that simplify the 3d models of AI planes? I've tried a couple and it _seemed_ to (unscientifically) help here.
