What am I missing? Ti4200 performance!?!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. It's been a while since I last begged for help. :-hahOk, here it is.I have:AMD Athlon XP 1600+512 DDR (2100)ASUS GF2 GTS 32Mb (DDR)Today I brought the ASUS GF4 Ti4200 128Mb. Before putting it in I opened up FS, set all sliders to max, put spot view and saved the flight. I had 5FPS...understandable with GF2 32Mb...right?Then I put in the GF4 and opened that same flight...my FPS are exactly the same...5FPS...#####??What am I missing here? I got the latest drivers (44.03) and the card shows up in Settings and in FS. I would have thought a Ti4200 would make an improvement in FS. X-Plane works prefectly with AAX4 and AFX4 with everything on max..but in FS2002 it makes absolutely no difference. Anyone got any ideas/suggestions about what to do about this? Please... :-hahTake careMike

Mike - The problem is that you're being limited by the CPU. It looks like all it's going to do with the sliders maxxed is 5 FPS as that's all polygons the CPU will process. You'll have to back off on the sliders to get any framerate improvement. The clouds and the autogen scenery are the real FPS killers. Next is probably traffic. Play with it some and you'll find the right combination that suits the way you use the sim. Doug

Try 45.20 drivers I have same video card, installed those and got lot better performance everything Maxed Out I do have a tad faster CPU but I still think you can try the drivers BTW that GF2 GTS is better then most of the GForces that came out after except maybe untill we get to Ti4200./4400 and 4600. Oh and I can only have AAx2 and AFx4 (AF doesn't matter much), but there is a difference in AAx2 and AAx4 I can not run AAx4 just too slow for me (FPS wise) there are some minor isuees with the 45.20 but you can give them a try. I use them and they work well for me.Andy

So waht you guys are saying is that 1.4Ghz is not enough for FS2002?? Damn...I don't even rememebring there being any 1.4Ghz CPU when FS2002 came out...i could be wrong though. Still I expected at leasst some improvement going from GF2 32mb to GF4 128mb..I mean not even 1FPS increase..nothing. What does it take to run FS at full?? Is there a system on this planet capable of running FS with all sliders Max?Also, another thing I noticed...after the new card, the ground scenery is really blurred....and FPS are still in their 10s. I put AAX2 and AFX2 now..I got like 5 FPS increase but still choppy at around 10-14FPS with ugly blurred textures.I don't know what to do now...it seems that I will never be able to enjoy FS..I have had this plague of crappy FS performance since I had FS95. Only FS is like this though..other games run prefect with big improvements. MS has placed a curse on me. :-(BTW..where do I get the 45.20 drivers? THey are not on the nvidia site..are they?

I've got a Ti4200 as well.. here is what works for me:2xAA and 4xAF gives good looking textures with 1280x960x32 resolution.Disable AA in the sim, enable in the display adapter properties! Back off on mesh (80%), AI, water effects, no building shadows, autogen and scenery complexity normal.. no clouds.. and pretty soon you'll have fps in the 20s.. that is where you want to be!If you want more scenery, AI etc.. upgrade your processor, but you should be able to do just fine with what you've got!

Thanks Bert.I'll give it a try and see what happens. I jsut finished a flight from Vancouver to Seattle in the PA A320 and FPS were in the teens...got pretty choppy on final though....8FPS. God, I was expecting so much more..lol. Thanks for the screenshot.

Another thing to try is reducing the screen resolution to 1024x768.. that is what I was using with the Ti4200 card on a Celeron 1000, back a year ago..

A cpu upgrade will likely run you less than $200 - and it is very easy and straight forward. I'd look into that as well. Colin
