Hi Mike,I run Default Radius at 9.9, and Extended Radius at 4.9. The strange one is the Extended Levels. When I installed FS9 and then made the first flight, I went over to the .cfg file to see what had changed (and stayed the same) from 2K2. My Extended Levels value was 1242456... much different from the previous sim! I fiddled with it a bit, changing the value to "4" and then "5" (values closer to 2K2) but the image equality degraded, so I went back to the original value.

Mine were also defaulted to zero Mike. I haven't played with the numbers but, just based on FS8, I plugged in these. Seems to work fairly well:TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=4Doug

Hi Greg,This sure is strange. As I said, my original values were, and still were today before changing, set at 0 (zero)!?"TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21"Did you notice an improvement in the display of mesh elevation points and is there a performance hit when you up this value from 19."TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=1242456"Really don't know what to make of that value - doesn't make any sense. Thanks for your contribution.Anyone else care to post?Regards,MikeP4 2.4GHz (400FSB), 512MB PC2100 DDR Crucial, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Catalyst 3.5), Gigabyte GA-8IRXP MoBo, Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W, WinXP Home (SP1), DirectX 9.0b3DMark 2001SE : 123753Dmark 2003: 5311

Hi Doug,Could you please plug into your .cfg the value of the Terrain_Extended_Levels in my post above and give it a try? Curious to see what you think. Thanks,

Mike...>>"TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21"Did you notice an improvement in the display of mesh elevation points and is there a performance hit when you up this value from 19.>>I didn't notice much of a difference in the mesh elevation points (if I understand your question correctly, that is contolled by "TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR"). I did notice that the image is sharper (to my eyes), and yes there is a slight performance hit on my system (2400XP @ 2600, ASUS A7N8X, 1 Gig PC2700, 9700 Pro @ 350/330, Win XP Home).I recall reading here a few months ago an explanation by one of the add-on mesh gurus concerning the Vertex Levels, but can't remember specically what he said. Basically, I got out of his explanation that image quality will improve with a higher value than the stock "19", but there will be a performance hit.If that ain't muddy enough for you, I'll try again... :-)

This is what I've come up with using a texture with colored mips.the top row is FS2002 at the default settings (2.5 4.0 1).the middle row is the max I got in both FS2002 and FS2004.the bottom row is FS2004 at the default (0.0 0.0 xxxxxxx), I've seen people post different figures for the extended levels value.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/30074.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/30075.jpgthe colors for the mips are256x256=yellow y128x128=green g64x64=blue b32x32=white w16x16=purple p8x8=orange o4x4=red rI found 6 different patterns going from the lowest to the highestpattern-1 squares-21 rows-5 columns-5 # of sq.in row/column 3-5-5-5-3pattern-2 squares-25 rows-5 columns-5 # of sq.in row/column 5-5-5-5-5pattern-3 squares-29 rows-7 columns-7 # of sq.in row/column 1-5-5-7-5-5-1pattern-4 squares-37 rows-7 columns-7 # of sq.in row/column 3-5-7-7-7-5-3pattern-5 squares-45 rows-7 columns-7 # of sq.in row/column 5-7-7-7-7-7-5pattern-6 squares-49 rows-9 columns-9 # of sq.in row/column 1-5-7-7-9-7-7-5-1quantities of mipstop#1--middle#2--bottom#3y----49 ----21 ----49g----35 ----63 ---147b---252 ---252 ---588w--1008 --1008 --2352p--4032 --4032 --2240o-16128 -16128 -16128below are some of the settings and the pattern per mip whereTERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS= d_rTERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS= e_rTERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS= e_lcfg setting / pattern per mipd_r, e_r, e_l / y g b w p o rdef FS20022.5 4.0 1 / 6 1 1 1 1 1 -def FS20040.0 0.0 xxxxxxx / 1 1 1 1 1 1 -best achieved FS2002 / 6 6 6 6 1 1 -2.5 4.0 44.0 4.0 110.0 16.0 4best achieved FS2004 / 6 6 6 6 1 1 -all of these settings give equal results4.0 0.0 02.5 4.0 xxxxxxx2.5 4.0 44.0 4.0 14.0 4.0 xxxxxxx10.0 16.0 49.5 4.0 xxxxxxx9.5 4.0 0 thru 4some other values and results4.0 0.0 1 / 1 6 6 6 1 1 -4.0 0.0 2 / 1 1 6 6 1 1 -4.0 0.0 3 / 1 1 1 6 1 1 - 4.0 0.0 4 / 1 1 1 1 1 1 -2.9 4.0 1 / 6 2 2 2 1 1 -3.0 4.0 1 / 6 3 3 3 1 1 -3.2 4.0 1 / 6 4 4 4 1 1 -3.7 4.0 1 / 6 5 5 5 1 1 -Kurt M

Kurt,Great work, nicely done.>This is what I've come up with using a texture with colored>mips. This works great! I used the same method for testing DirectX versions with FS a while back.Would you mind reposting some of your values for us, well at least my weak mind is having a hard time with the interpretation. Thank You.

I think the discussion of the optimal settings can come to the end, you show us the best settings.Bye Markus

You find the pattern in the "ReadMe first" in this Forum in the message from Chris:TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19 This control the DEM resolution: 18 = 150m DEM, 19 = 75m DEM, 20 = 37m DEM, 21 = 19m DEM The setting of 21 means that 19m Mesh is displayed correct. If you use the high level mesh from FSGenesis (9.6 m) you need to set this value to 22!If you don't use additional mesh I recommend the setting of 20, because MS has some 37.5m mesh.ByeMarkus

Thanks a million Kurt, very much appreciated!If I understand you correctly, any of the following values will serve equally well?"best achieved FS2004 / 6 6 6 6 1 1 -all of these settings give equal results4.0 0.0 02.5 4.0 xxxxxxx2.5 4.0 44.0 4.0 14.0 4.0 xxxxxxx10.0 16.0 49.5 4.0 xxxxxxx9.5 4.0 0 thru 4"Does the selection of any particular set of values have implications for the performance of the sim?Mike
