Questions re: Central Coast California scenery by Al Wheeler

Featured Replies

Hi to all of you:I'm a long time sim pilot (>23 yrs) and around two months ago started flying lessons out of KSBP (San Luis Obispo Regn) in a C172SP. I am using MSFS2004 with Justin Tyme's 38m mesh, GE Pro, UT, FE, UT and lots of GoFlight modules, TrackIR, CH yoke, throttles, pedals. Over the years I've added many airports throughout the country, including those along the west coast of Califonia by ImagineSim (San Jose), Fly Tampa (San Francisco, San Diego), etc.Now that I'm actually doing real flying in my area (I live in Paso Robles in the "Central Coast") I'd like to improve the look of the Central Coast airports to highten the sense of visual realism. I have downloaded, but not yet installed the latest iteration of Al Wheeler's Central Coast California scenery. Before I do that I want to ask these questions:If you are using his scenery for this area are you satisfied with the look of things? Has it greatly improved the default airports such as San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Santa Maria, etc.? Did you have any installation issues that may have conflicted with other scenery that you had previously installed (see my listing above)?Waiting patiently for your replies.R/Mike

I don't know of any recent scenery by Al, but I do have the scenerys he's produced a few years(?) ago for California. Is there something newer? What I have is installed along with UT (Ultimate Terrain) for FS9 and I haven't noticed any conflicts. I don't have Fly Tamps' SFO so I can't comment on that. Jim D.

I think his previous posting of that scenery came in waves (several updates over quite some time). I think the zipped scenery file that I downloaded was his last one (in which he put all of the required and optional files together to eliminate the need for the user to deal with several updates). My guess is that what you probably have from him on your system (assuming you did all the updates) would be what I'm now contemplating installing. That said, you mentioned no "conflicts" with UT.....but, are the airport sceneries done well (very detailed) or are they cartoonish appearing?

Here is a screenie of KZIA, Santa Ynez. I don't know how many airports he's done, and while they are not Fly Tampa, this one is just fine. Accurate? I don't know. But it has been a while since I've been flying Calif. Been in Alaska bush flying, now in the Carribbean with the PMDG 737. Why not install it and check it out. Back up any files that will be modified, but I'm not sure if any are as each of his had the scenery and texture bgl's. in there own folders. You can always delete it if you wish. Jim D.

Thanks for posting the picture. Last night I did (finally) install the scenery (after contacting Al Wheeler directly because one of the links to a required file wasn't working...so he forwarded me the file). I live in Paso Robles and volunteer at that airport at a Warbird's museum. When I loaded FS2004 and viewed the PR airport (KPRB) I was VERY impressed. Al got it all right.....lots of small details too. I then checked San Luis Obispo (KSBP) ...where my flight school is located....and he nailed that one too! I had a lesson in the pattern yesterday and did 9 landings at San Luis.....then repeated it on my sim last night and it was fabulous.Thank you Al Wheeler for your effort!R/Mike :(

You're very welcome Mike. Hey, I lived in King City and Greenfield for 16 years. But that was over 22 years ago. Now in San Jose, CA.I'm glad to know you found the scenery to your liking. Jim D.
