ATC far out pproach clearance

Recommended Posts

Guest av8ber

Hi: Is there a way to change the way ATC routes your plan when approaching an airport? I usually get a direct route and ILS Rwy info about 89 to 96 miles out from my destination airport with several more check points still to fly. Since I am using small single engine planes I would like to continue flying till I am closer to the airport before being vectored like a large jet. Any Ideas? Thanks....Al

Unfortunately, no. MSFS is hard-coded to do things the way it does, even though they aren't realistic.I believe Radar Contact does do a better job at this, but it's an add-on and is also being updated for better features. Their forum is on this site. Go check them out.Chris

There's two ways I get around this.I create and fly the flight plan as normal, then when ATC wants to start vectoring me way far out, I'll request the approach with a transition that keeps me on my route. If there isn't an approach listed that will keep me on my filed route, I cancel IFR and keep flying with flight following so I stay in contact and get handed off to the next controllers. When I get closer to the airport I reopen the IFR flight plan and pick my approach, either with vectors or by a transition. If I'm flying into an airport with approach services, I will create my flight plan and not load it. Then fly the route with flight following. When I get handed over to the approach controller, I open my IFR flight plan and let them start vectoring me.
