Baikonur Cosmodrome and Krainiy Airport Scenery?

Featured Replies

The world's first and largest operational space launch facility - the 'Baikonur Cosmodrome'. Located in Kazakhstan, 90 meters above sea level. Following the collapse of the USSR the whole area is leased to Russia. The Cosmodrome is served by Krainiy Airport.I often find I want to visit Baikonur, land at Krainiy Airport but there's no add-on scenery for the area of any kind - I wonder why that is?I find it surprising that there has been no scenery of Baikonur for FS9 or FSX - at least none that I know of. Way back a freeware scenery for Baikonur was released for FS98 and I think after that there was a very small scenery of the area released for FS2000 but that was it. It would be great to fly on route to Krainiy Airport and see all the different rockets, launch complexes and facilities - Soyuz, Voskhod, Vostok, Proton, Tsyklon, Zenit, etc... and also the Buran facilities along with the Buran Shuttle itself. There's so much history and achievement in this location and it would be a very interesting place to fly to and from. There's a number of very well modeled, reasonably close, freeware airports you can fly in from. For example from UAAA Almaty within Kazakhstan or over the border in Russia there's numerous choices. Its an interesting situation with the Baikonur Cosmodrome as it was originally within the USSR, but following the breakup it was now in independent Kazakhstan. However the Russian space program continued to operate from Baikonur. During 2005 an agreement was ratified between Russia and Kazakhstan extending Russia’s rent term of the spaceport until 2050. The rent is fixed at 115 million US dollars per year and has been the source of a long-running dispute between the two countries. The results of that dispute have possibly prompted Russia to begin upgrading its own Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk Oblast of Northern Russia as a potential fallback option - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plesetsk_Cosmodrome

Further to add to that I would also like to see some scenery for Plesetsk Cosmodrome. It's very close to Arkhangelsk / Talagi Airport (ULAA) - for which there's nice freeware scenery available. Also close by are Apatity (ULMK) and Murmansk (ULMM) Airports, which too are very well represented by freeware, although I had to do some re-editing of the textures and AFCADs for these two sceneries to eliminate some minor issues. Vologda (ULWW) is close by as well. St Petersburg (and the great FS9 scenery for that area from Project ULLL and contributors) is also not too far from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome.A little further out there's many other airport choices to fly to or from, all very well represented by fantastic FS9 freeware.
