Boeings New 787 Simulator

Recommended Posts

It amazes me how plain Jane the graphics are in the simulators. Granted they don't need to be anything fancy, in fact the only simulator I have ever been in didn't have screens at all and was just a C172 instrument set up, but still. They have a $30,000,000 simulator and don't even have graphics equivalent to a $40 copy of FSX haha.Although I do like that sand storm :)

they do that on purpose...they'd rather have poor graphics than have every boeing pilot in the world complain about their FPS...In all honestly, if I had millions of dollars there's no doubt I would own one of these in my mansion, but if I couldn't hook it up to VATSIM, I may get bored...

Actually, I got a very clear picture of exactly where my house is in London from that...granted it's pretty obvious because I live by a park, but the photoscenery isn't too bad at all!

Thanks for the link, did you notice 2:22, what is that?? VSD swath now 2D instead of 1D, following magenta line? :(sig.gifEdit: Oh, just wanted to add how remarkable I find the outside view does not flicker at all, unlike many sims I've seen before (not only thru a cam lens)... Really seems to be a step forward in that aspect.

The reason screens flicker like that is because the camera is recording at a faster rate of which the monitor is refreshing. This mainly happens with Tube monitors or televisions and terrible LCD monitors.

Haha, yeah. I figured if I could get and sustain a great frame rate then a $30,000,000.00 sim could. Perhaps I'll call the manufacturer for a job? JK :wink:They might not have the looks but I bet their physics are MUCH better than anything we'll see for a while. It just seems odd that they can't at least nudge the envelope a tad more (not push it, just a little nudge).I don't know about FTX though, "The worlds not that ready" haha.

Dan,The DC-10 simulator I trained on in the 1970s had a camera that moved along a model scenery set similar to that used for model trains. I think they have come a long way. Bill Bridges

Hi Bill,I couldn't agree more. They sure have come a long way. My point though is still 100% relevant and is partly due to that statement. They have come a long way yet some things look the same graphically is all. Again though I 100% understand that it isn't the scope of a simulator, just that they do, in fact, look dull as hell :( Wow, that I would love to see (the camera along the scenery). I did a lot of research in film making a while back and loved the way they did it years ago and all the insane amounts of work put into it before things like Maya, After Effects etc, came along. You don't have any pictures by any chance, do you? Would love to see them! Now that I think of it, I think I read somewhere that MS was responcible for some simulator programs?

I read the same thing, Dan. Microsoft is supplying to Lockheed Martin. Take a look at the news http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/nov09/11-30warfightertrainingpr.mspx

As I'm sure you're all aware The Combat Simulator developer "DCS" Digital Combat Simulator of Lock-On/Black Shark fame has made a realworld Military A-10C WartHog simulator for the U.S.Airforce[and I believe other NATO forces who fly her] they are very close[most likely end of 2010] to releasing a Civilian version of The A-10C Sim,You can read more about it here........http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/

Thanks for the links. Re : the A-10 : No other air force flies the A-10. Only the USAF, reserves and ANG. Re : the 787, anybody knows if Boeing ever considered a side stick for the 787? If a discussion, position paper etc. is available on this topic, would appreciate a link. Thanks again,Bruno
