heading indicator

Recommended Posts

Hi Id like to know if the heading indicator can be used to fly to an airport. Because I take off and then am lost. I dont want to use VOR. So when I ask the nearest airport for directions. He says 3 oclock 14miles. So I turn 90 degress right where 3 oclock is but I never find the airport and the direction just changes to 8 oclock or something. Please help me out. Thanks.

Why in the world don't you want to use the VOR? In the real world you had better use it, or indeed you will probably get lost, unless you know your area very well!!!

You either fly by sight (marginally, but sometimes possible in FS) or you use some electronic device to guide you - either VORs or GPS. At least this is what real life flying demands of you. If you refuse to do any of the above - you better stay on the ground :-lolMichael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

Yes, you can use the HI to find an airport. If you have a sectional and plot the course with all corrections properly as well as adjust for wind at altitude. Then your climb, cruise and descent rates need to be calculated too and it can be done. If you think you are heading in the right direction you can climb to altitude (anything higher than you already are so you can get a better look) and just look for the airport as you pass over it or close to it.:)
