September 28, 201015 yr it means you need to keep flying past the airport which is probably around 12 o'clock, and then turn around and start your base approach. Say KJFK is 12 oclock 10 miles and you are heading 200, if ATC says land runway 06 downwind you would overfly the airport then turn around for your base turn.

September 28, 201015 yr ... the numbers of this particular runway are 8 and 23, ...I'd cancel landing request and find another runway.But say they were 8 and 26, you're coming from the south - going north towards the airport. Your downwind is the airport's position once you make the turn to downwind. If you are going to land on 26, you turn to the right and the airport is out your left window. A left downwind. If you are going to land on 8, you turn left and the airport is out your right window. A right downwind.Beware the airports that have runways 8 and 23, if there's only one runway. Crabbing may not be optional! :(
