PAPI lights help

Recommended Posts

Evening all,I've been doing some manual landing practice in the PMDG MD-11 recently, mostly at Geneva. What I've noticed is the PAPI lights aren't very bright at all - barely visible in fact, as can be seen in the screenshot. I've just done a test around Manchester and the PAPI lights are visible from miles out. I'm using FSDT Geneva and UK2000 Manchester. Is there any way of rectifying this so the PAPI lights at Geneva are brighter? Thanks in anticipation.Adam

You can use these statements in your FSX.CFG file [Display] section to adjust lighting just choose the values that suit you best, these are from my config file:RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=0.7RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=0.8RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=0.7RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=1.0I guess that you will be most interested in the VASI scalar line. These factors are universal so it is not possible to apply them to a single airfield its all or nothing.Good luck.

You could do what yellowjack suggested and turn up your VASI to a higher number like 1.2. However I thing yours look ok. In the real world these lights aren't as bright from miles away as you would think. I have actually toned my down even smaller to the settings I have below. RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=0.7RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=0.4RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=0.5RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=0.4One thing to keep in mind, some developers like Simwings in their GibralterX scenery and some other devlopers make VASI/PAPI lights that are independant of the FSX generated ones. In FSDT's new KDFW the PAPI's are running off simconnect and the textures and lights on them aren't effected by the fsx.cfg VASI tweaks.

I agree with cmpbelljsc - most of the time the VASI / PAPi / Approach 'Rabbit" lights are too bright in FS. Use the recommended tweaks and adjust as needed for your own tastes.

I guess I've become too familiar with the default PAPI/VASI lights.I'll give the tweaks a go and see how I get on.Many thanks for all you suggestions.Adam
