OT - Avsim Java Problem

Hi there,I hope anyone can help me with this rookie WinXP new install system. Just bought a new system and it's awsome but when I access avsim.com I get an error message saying that I need to download "Java Virtual Machine".When I "OK" that I get to the Microsquish homepage telling me that "We're sorry. Well I have never had that problem, but first make sure that you are using the latest patches. I believe Microsoft were sued by Sun, and cannot therefore provide Java VM that way. However, I think it still works via Windows Update. Thanks guys for the tip. Unfortunately the windows update didn't cure the problem. I installed all of the by microsoft suggested updates but still get the same error :-hmmmAny other suggestions? Peter, I'm not sure what the problem may be. As far as I know, there's nothing on our website that should require the JAVA VM from MS. I am running IE 6 and have never seen this problem. Can you come directly to the forums at http://ftp.avsim.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi without any problems popping up?

Hi Eric,The link is http://java.sun.com/ you want the one i was advised to get, the full V2. SDK download!! 38megs. Link http://servlet.java.sun.com/logRedirect/fr...4/download.html installed it. Went back to Microsoft Updates and found that i had some more Critical updates, one was to make Java work. Then all was okay.Best Shaun.

I just got my new computer and installed Windows XP on it. I got the very same issue - no automatic installation of JVM. So I did some digging on Microsoft's website, found some update and downloaded it. Still didn't work. After that I tried Windows Update and it seemed to work. Note that I was quite confused at that moment :-hmmm so the facts here may be plain trash coming out of my brain. ;-)Cheers,Dave :-)

Unfortunately, there isn't a solution, yet. Per the arrangement with Sun, Microsoft will "re-introduce" Java support in SP1 for XP when it is released. I don't know when that will be. Until then, you will have to download the Java 2 runtimes. Scott,There is no need to use JVM on AVSIM, but there is a Java applet on the homepage with a scrolling text. So the forum is not a problem. :-)Dave

Funny - I had to reinstall XP myself last night, and got the very same message...After much searching, I did go to Sun to get the JVM there. What *I* don't like is Microsoft's utter lack of cooperation - THey were insanely excited about Java when it it first came out, but when they discovered that they were not going to be able to take it over and make it their own, they throw a tantrum like a 4 year old and decide not to "support" it anymore. As of 2004, any new Windows product will not ship with Java support. Mainly because by then they feel their own C# language (which apparently looks and feels quite a bit like Java) will be the language de'jour. Still praying for a great linux flightsim. If it weren't for Flight Simulator 2002, my OS would be a little different! :) (I'd dual boot, but that is just a true pain in the arse - and virtual machines and WINE don't have the performance needed to run FS under Windows under Linux)-Germ
