Now that we know a little bit more ... what's the best tweaking?

Featured Replies

I've read through the README section, and FAQs on other forums and it seems that there are a lot of conflicting reports on what will be the best tweaks for FS9.Could someone prepare a document for us, that will give a list of what to do when you do an install of FS9. I'm think for example on tweaks in the FS9.cfg file - in Windows Display Properties, what should be on and what should be off - display settings within FS9, how much sliders and what to click off.I know it will be different from one system to another - but what have we learned until now?Another example is: I've recently formatted my PC and reploaded everything. FS9 was running like a dream until I installed the virus Scanners and back was some stuttering. Even when every setting in McAfee was disabled, still stutters. Deleted the virus program and FS9 runs like a baby locked at 20 f/sec.I've picked up a tip to install my monitor's drivers and not to select the Plug-&-Play settings - that made a impact on the quality of the graphics - for sure!Things like this. Let's make one BIG document with all these tips and tweaks of what we know today.PS: I doubt that FS9 will be patched, we will have to live with all the pains and aches.

Hi,I'm sorry, but I think there are, as you have more or less put, to many differences in systems, and not only that, personal preferences as to what things should be checked, unchecked, and where sliders should be. Also, for example, I don't have any problem leaving my Norton's Anti-virus program(Systemworks 2003) running 100% of the time. That is yet another difference in peoples systems. You are welcome to look over a thread where I made a lot of suggestions while actively trying to help someone cure their performance woes.http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...topic_id=148068ONE of the things I go over in there is something you have mentioned here, and that is to use a driver for your monitor and not the default Windows Plug-&-Play driver. I also have my FS9.cfg settings posted in there. If you want, look the thread over. Perhaps I will roll it all up into one doc and post it in the sticky thread at the top titled 'READ ME FIRST!'. It'll take some extra work. But I don't think I can come up with a 'cure all' doc. That's why that READ ME FIRST! thread is there and keeps getting added to. ;)Regards,Jim

Terblanche,I am working on creating the document. It will not be any cure all, and will probably not even bring much at all to the table if anything for experienced users. But I think it will be a good one for the uninitiated. Hopefully anyway. Don't know just when I'll be posting it, but I'm working on it. ;)Jim

I'm not having any "pains and aches", not using any tweaks other than the changing of the pan rate. I just upgraded my old system which flew fine, but had the clouds fix and the renaming of the autogen file as it is a 1 gig system and I have to max out the settings. I just finished flying for 2 hours around AK in the 421 on my new rig (Athlon3200, ASUS NForce 2 MOBO, 1 gig high performance DDR, G4 4600) everything full, AA at 2X and AF at 4X. Frames locked at 30 and it was an amazing experience, very smooth and fluid and not a stutter, ever.I was having some issues with my old system, but nothing that made it unflyable, just a tad slow at times. I would suggest an upgrade if you really want the most out of it, but I have seen a ton of posts with high end Intel guys that can't get over 10FPS, so obviously that won't help all. The difference is night and day though, this sim is freakin awesome visually on a high end system that is running well. Can't wait to get a better vid card! ;-)Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://mysite.verizon.net/res052cd/mybannercva1.jpgCalVirAir International VAwww.calvirair.comCougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviationwww.cgrmtnhelos.com

Hi Michael,Well, I don't have much problem either after renaming the 'default.xml' file or using the fs9xml.zip file available in the Avsim library!! although that file doesn't eliminate the problem as completely as the renaming. But, I have seen questions, and spent time doing my best to answer them, as how to optimize your system and FS2004 enough, that I now want to make an FS2004 Optimization Guide! My guide won't really be so much about tweaking FS2004 as much as it will be about tweaking BIOS settings and Windows XP for performance. Because I feel while there is some tweaks to be done to FS2004, there's not really all that much. Autogen file, FS9.cfg file tweaks, FSW Cloouds, and unchecking AA in the sim. So to me, most of FS2004 is done by setting sliders, and what you can do with the sliders is dependent on what system you have, what resolution you use, how much AA and AF you use, and so I think slider settings are going to vary widely and have to be played with by the end user. Why, because not everyone is getting a new system like you just got. And, I think my guide won't really be about folks with high or low end systems as much as it will be about how experienced a computer user you are. Many people some in here asking what they do because they are uninitiated. And I'm hoping to make a something that covers a lot of bases all in one doc for people like this, although it might perhaps be a little legnthy.I should be posting it tomorrow. But since I addressed this post towards you Mike(as it seems your were replying to me), I'll let you know that you probably won't get much from it, as I think you are probably in the initiated group around here. But feel free to check it out if you feel like it and let me know what you think when you see it.Cheers,Jim

Man, I must be tired. I just happened to re-read my post here and I see I made a lot of ugly typos. *:-*

Hey Jim, my post wasn't pointed at ya, more like replying to the original post. I agree that a doc like the one you are working will help a ton of people. It amazes me that some still come and ask questions about topics and fixes that have been posted over and over again, and I realize many don't live here like us! LOL This alone lets me know that many will hopefully utlilize your work and get some benefit from it.Strange to see the posts still of high end users that have applied all the tweaks and still have problems, it is truly baffling to me. With my new rig, it installed as any new game would and I just cranked up the settings and flew, so I guess I am one of the lucky ones (knock on wood!). I wish nothing more than for any simmer to experience what I am right now, hopefully your new doc will be able to help them.Fly safe!Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://mysite.verizon.net/res052cd/mybannercva1.jpgCalVirAir International VAwww.calvirair.comCougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviationwww.cgrmtnhelos.com
