Cathay Pacific Nationality...?

Recommended Posts

Guest

OK, Cathay are based in Hong Kong, which is now part of China again. They are owned by the Swire Group, which, according to their web page, is a multinational group based in Hong Kong. So... Is Cathay a Chinese airline?Anyone got any thoughts or ideas about this one? Or even the correct answer ;-)Regards,Dave.

Cathay Pacific are indeed now a Chinese Airline. How do I know? They carry a Chinese B- prefix on their aircraft registrations. They are however, to be politically correct, in the Hong Kong S.A.R (Special Administrative Region) of China.

They are not a 'Chinese' airline. The registration maybe under China, but technically speaking, just because Cathay is a Hong Kong airline and is part of China, it doesn't make it Chinese. Swire was founded in England but remains a multinational company. CNAC may have shares in Cathay, but it doesn't make it 'Chinese'.

A lot of their pilots are British and Australian, they have been however employing more people from Hong Kong under the Cadet Pilot Program that they offer, which I am going to go for, since I am a Hong Kong resident.
