Help with Blue/Green & little detail scenery

Featured Replies

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? You can see from the attached screen grab (left one) that my scenery is blue or blue/green with very little detail and crispness. The whole thing looks smudged. I have included a copy of the website 30 cm image (right one) in about the same location - it is crisp and clear. This problem occurs with any location that I fly in – I picked KMTH so you can compare my 30 cm scenery with that shown on the web site. Hi How often do you refresh your screen?.I find that I must refresh the screen after starting the game then it is fine for a while.Hope this helps.

I've deleted the entire cache and reloaded everything. It happens no matter where I fly. It also happens with service 1. When I look at the same area in the map service (outside FSX) the images are crystal clear. This problem is at least six months old.

HiYou didn't answer my question.... How often do you refresh your screen?Regards

Tacoma,1. The color quality of your image is what Yahoo has on line. Comparison image appears to be Bing.. not reasonable to compare the two; they don't look anything alike.2. The max resolution from both services is probably 1m (level 17).. Yh displays zoom level 1 higher (zoom 18). In neither image can I clearly see the space between the engine and fuselage on the twins... so 17, at best. Any attempt at higher resolution is wasted effort, cpu cycles and HDD space and leads to much frustration and disappointment.a 1m tile is 1.4Mb. A 30cm tile is 22Mb - what a waste if it only contains 1m data.Regardless of the images available, if you tell TP to make 30cm scenery, it will - even if it has to make it using 1m or 5m or 20m source imagery.3. The 5m scenery 'ring' in FSX is about 4.8km max.. so 2.4m ring extends 2.4 km and 1.2m ring only 1.2km. The 60cm ring (if the photo source supported it) would be 600m and the 30cm ring only 300m out from the aircraft location. These are with the scenery LOD setting at slider far right (max). So even if you were getting 30cm imagery and making it, it might not even reach to the near end of the rwy at Marathon - difficult to judge distance with low display zoom settings. You would have to extend the range manually to 5.5 or 6.5 in the FSX config to extend the ranges a noticeable amount.Check your sources on line before flying, so you will know what to expect from that source and location. Most of the world doesn't even have 1m resolution - US and most of Europe and a few other isolated locations of significant interest. Everybody else is 20m or worse.

If you deleted Sv 3 jpgs AND scenery and tried again fresh with Svc 1 imagery, you couldn't possibly be seeing the same thing. Just switching services doesn't renew anything. If you flushed the world scenery, and switched to SV1, you're still looking at svc3 jpgs and nothing will be downloaded from svc 1 until you go to a new area ( or delete the unwanted jpgs using the service cache viewer so that you can use different source imagery to rebuild the scenery)I don't remember for sure how TP reacts to the finished scenery but missing jpg combination. It may just replace the jpgs and not disturb the completed scenery tiles. The only way to guarantee a fresh start is to remove the jpgs AND the scenery for that area.A brief "exploratory" start at a new location will clearly show you the limits of the available jpg imagery if you look at it with the cache viewer. Skeptical - what does "refresh the screen" mean? I thought that was the job of FSX - about 28 times per second. I don't understand what you are asking me!Illiaudais you said " If you flushed the world scenery, and switched to SV1, you're still looking at svc3 jpgs and nothing will be downloaded from svc 1 until you go to a new area ( or delete the unwanted jpgs using the service cache viewer so that you can use different source imagery to rebuild the scenery)" I am at loss to understand your point! I flushed, i.e. shift/deleted EVERY file (.jpg) in every folder, on the hard drive that the DOS TileProxy window loads to and then watched TileProxy reload every tile again. The creation dates for the .jpg were new the day I ran the test that gave the same results - so how could FSX be using the same "old" tiles? Does FSX have some magic way to restore those shift/deleted files?I load Yahoo Maps and go to a particular location, I set the eye level to be exactly the same as the altitude in FSX where I have flown my plane to and paused -while looking straight down at exactly the same scenery as I see in the Yahoo Window. There was an enormous difference between the Yahoo Map image and the image in FSX (TileProxy SVC3)! Illiaudais you said "2. The max resolution from both services is probably 1m (level 17).. Yh displays zoom level 1 higher (zoom 18). In neither image can I clearly see the space between the engine and fuselage on the twins... so 17, at best. Are you also saying that TileProxy QuickGuide (http://www.edtruthan.com/tileproxy/tutorial/) is incorrect (faking it?) when he shows 30cm images for Fresno using Service 3?THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESOLVED!!I made some major changes in the FSX.cfg based on the work done by ******* and restarted TileProxy (service 3) and FSX. Suddenly the real world scenery I see in FSX is just about as clear and crisp as I see in Yahoo Maps. I am not sure which one of the ******* Buffer Pools recommendations made the huge difference but one of them sure did! I made no changes to the Tileproxy ini file.THE PROBLEM HAS COME BACK!!I reloaded the same flight and started TileProxy and FSX and now see blurry - blue green - images and scenery. As far as I know I've made no changes from two days ago when the scenery was crisp and clear. AH -the famous "I've not changed a thing since it worked last time" - I used to love that when I was in Tech Support

HiSorry if I wasn't very clear with my question. To make TP work for me I need to refresh the TP scenery occasionally, this makes the views 'sharp' again until I run out of 'sharpness'.On the menu bar in FSX go to Addons - Tileproxy - Refresh Scenery.Or you can set a key to 'Refresh Scenery' found in Settings - Controls - Buttons/Keys menu in the settings menu for FSX.These are basic actions that almost everyone running TP has to go through to make it run good - What will the future hold eh?.Hope this helps.Regards.

???Are you staying in the same area (KMTH)? Fixing issues is difficult if you don't stay put long enough to get it all sorted out...
Are you also saying that TileProxy QuickGuide (http://www.edtruthan.com/tileproxy/tutorial/) is incorrect (faking it?) when he shows 30cm images for Fresno using Service 3?
Fresno has 30cm imagery... Marathon does not - simple as that. Ed was illustrating the potential quality in the sim where higher resolution imagery is available. Many metro areas have very high resolution, but away from populated areas 1m and 2m are more the norm. His Marathon picture, BTW, was service1 at 1.2m, not service3.
I flushed, i.e. shift/deleted EVERY file (.jpg) in every folder, on the hard drive that the DOS TileProxy window loads to and then watched TileProxy reload every tile again. you downloaded (Marathon area) jpgs and stored in the cache (I:\TileProxyDownloadJPGCache\cache.service3); TP made bmps from them and stored in the TileProxy Photoreal World\Texture\0302 subfolder. Once they are made, they remain until (1) you delete them or (2) Tileproxy remakes them for some reason. Tileproxy seems to 'replace' missing jpgs if it can't find them in the cache, but doesn't need to rebuild the scenery tiles it already has that match the specs in the ini. It is the bmp versions (1.2km square scenery tiles) that FSX brings into memory for display. Many changes to the .ini will re-generate the bmps: changing the level min/max, changing level mapping, turning watermask on/off. Raising lod_max to a higher resolution (in an area that you've previously flown over) WILL, reducing to a lower resolution will NOT. You started at the highest lod_max setting so you can only go down - which won't force a rebuild. Flying into an area that was previously at a lower resolution will 'upgrade' the bmp tiles to the higher resolution. There are subtle aspects to TileProxy that neither Christian nor Ed mention. Things that are beyond the "beginner" level. When do bmp tiles change is one of them. What happens when the seasons change? How do you 'flush' the blue-green KMTH area without wiping out anything else? Other fine points: TileProxy lod_max should not be higher res than the available imagery; FSX can be. Insure that your default flight season is the same as the actual flight... I found I was making both Summer and Winter versions of scenery last week when I crossed the equator. And it goes on and on.There is NO 'one size fits all' ini setup. It needs to be adjusted for the available imagery at varying locations AND the optimum for your system. I couldn't/wouldn't fly 30cm even if the whole world was available. you can save a particular configuration of ini just as a different .ini file using "save as": FRESNO-30cm-svc3.ini for instance, and copy over the proxyuser.ini when you want to go back and fly with the previous settings. You should NOT just jump from Fresno at 30cm to an area that only has 1m or 5m max. Shut down TP and FSX, reconfigure the ini and restart at the new location with appropriate settings.Scenery and terrain SDK tools helpful in understanding FSX scenery and how TP works with it. I am curious - always interested in how things work and 'why do it do that?"Many 'discoveries' are described and discussed in numerous previous threads over the last year or more.Loyd
