A little Heads-Up on the NGX...

Chris,If you go to Airliners.net and look under the 737-800 series and select cockpit photos go to the 5th page and look at the Travel Serice pic, you will see that the gap you are refering to is exactly like the real thing, I would post it but I don't think I can.I wondered about that too, but you got to think who is also developing this plane.Mike Davey 777

You can post a link, just not the photo itself.

I'm not sure why, since your posting a link to the actual page on a.net instead of posting the photo, there's no copyright issues, but I suppose there could be some rule about it that I didn't see.

It looks great! But there is something about the buttons/switches that don't look right, they don't seem to be connected to the background i.e. hovering a little, Maybe it's their colour as they look too light or have no shadow rendered.........but overall, it looks good.Chris Farrell
Chris,One of the problems with FSX is that it's lighting is extremely basic, and not always realistic. The problem you mention with knobs appearing to float is due to the fact that they are flat shaded all around, with no shadows toward the bottom (where there is no source of light) as you would expect. Painting shadows on the knobs doesn't work, because the knobs turn, and hence, the shadows would turn with it.That being said, your post has prompted a bit of thought on my end, and in turn, a few hours of toil, but I think we have come up with a fairly satisfying solution Big%20Grin.gif . You'll see it in action in the next VC video or screenshots we post.

Guys, we took 35GB of insanely high-resolution photos of this cockpit, plus the Boeing technical drawings that we're basing our work on... there's really nothing that looks wrong because of a lack of knowledge or something on our part - like Vin said, there's some limitations here because FSX doesn't have a dynamic lighting system like virtually every other 3D engine on the planet.

35 Gigs, WOW!Makes me wonder how big this is gonna turn out to be. Could we get a rough estimate, like more than 10GB or around 7, something like that?

Ryans not saying that the NGX is 35GB he is saying that he took pictures that took up 35GB of space and he took the pictures of the NGX If im wrong Ryan please correct me. But I dont think that the NGX is that much space, that would be a LOT!!

LOL.. no we arent using 35 gigs of textures for the NGX. Last I checked you would need about 35 video cards in your PC to handle that.

That'll be interesting to see.Don't get me wrong, I like the way the NGX looks......In the back of my mind I know FSX is limited and all developers do a great job with their add-ons. The button lighting/shadow thing was the first thing I noticed when I saw the pics/video....it's not a deal breaker :).....but I thought I'd say something anyhow.Chris Farrell

Vin,Interesting you bring up shadows moving with the knobs. I know I'm going to get flamed just for mentioning their name nd PMDG in the same sentence, but if I recall Airsimmer managed to make a VC where the flap lever had a shadow and moved flawlessly with it during animation - along with all the other shadows in the flight deck.I'm not sure how they did it, or if it's an FS9 only thing, or leads to a more complex flight deck, but they did it. I'm not suggesting PMDG try it, just thought it was an interesting little tidbit to throw into the discussion of flight deck shadows.
