December 6, 201015 yr I had the exact same problem earlier this year using Vista, it seems to be a problem with file associations.Couldn't fix the problem, did a complete format and installed Win 7.Sorry I can't suggest anything better.Mike Taking off is optional, landing is mandatory!
December 6, 201015 yr Author yep that is what I'm afraid of... I'm thinking that is all that is left to do..now, one thing though I do have all FSX stuff on another hard drive and my win7 etc on another.if I would just reformat the bootup drive, I shouldn't have to reinstall all things FSX? yes? Ciao!

If so, they are links and should have the .lnk extension. Right click one and look at properties and you'll see they reference a program. If you mean the icons associated with files in explorer that's a different deal. Can you take a screenshot and show what you're talking about?DJ

December 6, 201015 yr You have to understand how the Windows Registry works: The Registry holds the name and location of every single file in Windows and makes a corresponding .ink file for every filename, so that Windows can quickly reference where every file is. The file system in a nut shell. Those who know how the Registry works; feel free to correct me. Paul Gluck. December 6, 201015 yr Author yes Im talking about the desktop icons, when I open them up and see the target, the target they point to is good. So then, you think I should just be able to rename them, doesn't workthen if I delete the old icon on the desktop and drag a new exe to create a shortcut on the desktop is then jumps back to the .lnk extension again.... Ciao!
December 6, 201015 yr What exactly are you trying to do? Desktop icons all have the .ink extension, thats normal. Jay

December 6, 201015 yr oh yeah, they were all associated with adobe readernow I have them all associated with rex2I need to restore them to there default program and I can't seem to do that.Find the .exe in Windows Explorer for the programs you are having a problem with and RIGHT click it then select 'Send To/ Desktop'. You will have a new working icon for that program. Jay
December 6, 201015 yr Should be OK, might be worth backing up your fsx.cfg ( just incase you have made changes to it ), and reinstalling FSX over the top of the old one so as to keep your registry up to date. All you need to do is to download and run the FS_Registry_Repair.exe tool from Flight1. It will put the correct path to the flight sim in the registry. There is no need to reinstall the whole thing!!!!! Sorry, but you misunderstood the purpose of the registry, the file system and .lnk files completely here. The file system holds informations of files, their location and the associated metadata (file system explained; NTFS explained). The registry does other things (Windows registry explained). .lnk files are soft links pointing to destination files (symbolic links explained). Andreas, LOWW - Nihil sumus et fuimus mortales. And I was just giving a basic run down of the file name half of the registry. I know the registry does a lot more than name where a file is. Just to be clear. Paul Gluck.
