VC cockpits still way too bright at night in FS9

One of the things that surprised me most about night flying in getting my PPL was just how dark it really is! I can approximate the effect by adjusting monitor contrast and brightness with FS9 but the VC is still way too bright. While 2D panels seem to provide subtle backlit instruments with or without a dome flood light, the VC seems limited to just a super bright pink flood. You might not even notice this unless you are flying the sim in a dark room. Is there any way to darken the VCs? This seems to be just as true in Dreamfleet and other high quality models. ThanksDavid
