January 3, 201115 yr The crazy world of the FSX.cfg file...For the longest time, (where once I never had it....) I have had the dreaded FSX 'freeze-up' whereby you are in flight for about 10 minutes, and then all of a sudden, your total animation comes to a dead halt with only the sound of the engine running. You don't CTD, but just sit there totally dead. You can usually wait it out, and after about 10 or more minutes, all of a sudden, the animation returns and you might or might not have this PITA situaltion again. Not all flights, but most....Well...in trying to squeeze a little more smoothness out of the sim, I increasedTEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=60 ( my normal setting for months) to the amount of '80'.What happened? No more freeze-ups for myself. I now can fly hours (for instance, I just landed at KOAK from a flight starting at CAF8, that was about 800 NM's or so) with no further mentioned. The ONLY thing I changed in my entire .cfg file was increasing the above setting from 60 to 80. That was it! I not only got the best animation (smoothness in progression of flight) but as now stated, I have flown for hours since having tried the new setting and have stability. The standard setting is 40. I have tried of course 60, 100, 400, etc...as per other user's postings over time, but NONE have produced no freeze-ups or the best fluid animation as just doubling the default setting for this entry.So...if you have the freeze-up issue showing up now and again, or for every flight....give the setting of 80 a try and see if that clears it up for you also.Cheers,Mitch
January 3, 201115 yr Every system is different. I've tried all settings and tested for a while with them. On my current system, I have found a TBM setting of 60 with framerates locked at 45 is best.On my previous weaker system, I found a TBM of 80 worked better with framerates locked at 25.There isa connection with the TBM and the framerate lock. All systems are different and all we can really do is experiment until we find out what works best with our own system.IAN Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)
January 3, 201115 yr I've never altered my .cfg file. Never. Not done any tweaks at all. I only fiddle with the settings in FSX. Not saying you shouldn't tweak if you feel so inclined. Just that I've never bothered and everything works well on my system. Maybe I could squeeze a few more FPS if I had the inclination and skill, but I just haven't felt the need. I must be lucky, I suppose, although I do wonder what might be possible if I had more knowledge in that regard.Anyway, happy tweaking :( Ian
January 3, 201115 yr FS without tweaking is like driving 50kmh in a Ferrari.Really? If I've got smooth flight, sharp scenery and good frames, what am I missing?Ian
January 3, 201115 yr Really? If I've got smooth flight, sharp scenery and good frames, what am I missing?IanYou Englishmen really have no sense of humor, right? I guess the english humor is called that for a reason...
January 4, 201115 yr Really? If I've got smooth flight, sharp scenery and good frames, what am I missing?IanIan - sorry - but you'll never know what you're missing until you get yourself a rig that can show FSX at close to it's best. In order to make that statement you need to have a pc which is waaaay above what you're running right now: no, my friend - you cannot possibly know what you're missing with a quad and a 9800GT. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.

January 4, 201115 yr Really? If I've got smooth flight, sharp scenery and good frames, what am I missing?IanFor starters, there is a bug with the game and you need to put in HIGHMEMFIX if you want to fly long hours in a complex airplane like the PMDG 747 with addon scenery.
January 4, 201115 yr IanFWIW, I don't have any tweaks in my cfg. file either. I used too. But since I got the rig I have in my sig(a year and a half ago), any tweaks made no difference or made things worse. However, I don't have any add ons, no complex planes or detailed scenery. That is why I can fly with such a low end system. And guess what, FSX works great and I have alot of fun. I would love to have a high end i7 and the newest GTX whatever they are up to now, but I just can't. Not for a good while. That being said, I just got a new laptop for Christmas. I am using tweaks for it, because FSX doesn't run without them on this laptop. I am finding out how CPU hungry FSX is, because while the laptop has no real GPU (no AA, bummer), if it had anything less than the i3 and fast ram that it does have, FSX would not run at all. Good enough for a quick FS fix away from home.Bob Bob i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.
January 4, 201115 yr You Englishmen really have no sense of humor, right? I guess the english humor is called that for a reason...You have to add a smiley that indicate that your'e joking :( I don't use any exotic tweaks. Here is an excellent tweak tip (not new, but still valid): http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?topic=11307.0
January 4, 201115 yr ... you cannot possibly know what you're missing with a quad and a 9800GT.I guess I cannot know what I am missing with a [email protected] and a 512MB-9600GT either :(I've never altered my .cfg file. Never. Not done any tweaks at all. I've got a similar system to yours... if you ever want to try something, try adding the following to the front of your fsx.cfg file. If it doesnothing, just delete it again :( [JOBSCHEDULER]AffinityMask=14 // Moves most of the FSX load off Core 0[bufferPools]UsePools=1 // Setting this to 1 will turn the BufferPools ON (stability), setting it to 0 disables them (Performance).RejectThreshold=98304 // 96kBPoolSize=8388608 // Defines an 8MB BufferPool Bert
January 4, 201115 yr You have to add a smiley that indicate that your'e joking :( Ah yes, my bad... seriously :(
January 4, 201115 yr You Englishmen really have no sense of humor, right? Whooah! That's what we Brits say about everyone else.. And of course, we're right :( IanPs @ Bert - thanks. May give it a whirl.. I have a very clean, well maintained system with few complex addons. FEX, ASE and UTX and a few planes is about it. I'm very impressed with how FSX works, despite my lack of CPU/GPU horses.
