Externalities and the NGX

Yeah, many folks on the FTX forums are not very happy that these images show OrbX scenery in rather very poor light, that the Orbx logo is even displayed. Just reporting, not sure if their frustration has merit.
Yeah, the first few shots it appears the autogen is on too low a setting. I suspect that for testing purposes FSX was tuned for minimal Image Quality, but they forgot to amp up the visuals (or choose a better location) for the screenshots. Of course, if PMDG puts the highest settings on for the ORBX when testing the plane, it's going to interfere with tuning the FPS of the model. I still remember the FSX beta shots with the maximum water quality, sure it looks beautiful, but what good are those visuals if they are really a slideshow. But that was then, and with the right autogen optimization and powerful 4.0 ghz cpu computers most likely the norm nowadays, excellent IQ and decent fps is very achievable now, as opposed to when FSX first debuted.

- sounds petty to me. Im sure the folks at ORBX are pretty happy, especially since there product was seen by thousands of people. And maybe you were even one of those who purchased PNW because of it.Its simple really. Good for PMDG, and better for ORbx.

Guys,There is an official agreement between us and Orbx, we are not using their scenery or logo without permission - we've been in contact with John the entire time. Yes, the first screenshots in this thread don't show off the scenery very well - Robert admitted that right in his post and we've talked to John about it. His settings were very low in the shot because he'd just rebuilt his FSX.cfg trying to fix a problem - that's been corrected and you won't see shots like that again.Look at the 2nd batch of screens here - the scenery looks much better:http://forum.avsim.n...38#entry1920238There's also several shots on our facebook of the plane at some of the Australian airports. There's gonna be a full post of that stuff coming.

David, you are correct in your observation that the MD11 did not have glass textures. This was by design to squeeze out every drop of performance we could find, and all of our efforts cumulatively payed off. This was quite a few years ago of course, and desktop PC's hadn't quite grown up enough to run FSX to its full potential. Despite this, a lot of people screamed and complained so this time around, we spared little detail.Anyway, here is a quick shot of the side window of the PMDG 737NGX parked at Orbx's YSCB Canberra. If you look closely you can see reflections of the cockpit interior, a touch of subtle dirt left over from the last rain, and even the glass pane's part number stamped into the corner.
I'm reluctant to post this because I know it will cause arguments but I am going to in the interest in reality. I see these reflections in may FS aircraft but in the real world you just don't see them. In 14 years of my airline career I have flown four different types including 10 years in the 737 and I haven't seen reflections like this. Also with the few reflections you do sometimes see you don't notice them because when you look out of the window your vision is focused at infinity. Again I post this purely in the name of reality because I believe we all want the most realistic simulation possible. Here are a few pictures I have taken of the 737 in the real world. Also I know at this point in the game it is probably not realistic for PMDG to change or eliminate the reflections they have put in but I would like them to keep this in mind for maybe updates and future aircraft.

I've been waiting for this for quite some time now just like everybody else. The 737NG series is my favorite from Boeing so far and I'm really looking forward to getting this. I might even have to buy the manuals and get fully acquainted as I'm sure there is a lot to learn about this aircraft. Keep up the great work PMDG and keep us updated, please!

I see the reflection on the last picture.

Before they added some of the heavier features from what I understand from a recent post...~Ryan Butterworth
The point Robert was making is that what we say about performance is always subject to change during development, not that the performance has actually gotten worse. We will not know the final performance level until we're done.

Hey Tabs, i het to ask but when could we see the outside lights and night shots?Sam B. - Jaggyroad Films

I am like another fellow posting a couple of pages before me, an audiophile and to me the sounds is infinitely more important than the visual quality of games in general and FSX in particular. I asked before about the sound of the landing gear being extended/retracted (and the wheels spinning?

at 0:55) Any comfirmating/denial of whether we'll hear something similar in the NGX? Also what is the vibrating sound that is heard immediately before and after liftoff? Doesnt seem to be cause by a bad runway as you can hear it after the mainwheels have lift off.Anyway one thing i feel haven't been performed realistically yet in FSX is the wind sound decrease with higher altitude, is this possible to implement? You can hear it later in the video i posted.

As you saw in the text of my post I don't deny that you sometimes see random reflections but you don't see the window frames and chart holder reflected like what is shown in many FS planes. In the J41 they went as far as reflecting the captains side of the cockpit in the FOs windows which doesn't happen in the real world and I am glad to see they haven't done on the 737.

I want landing lights and night shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha lol ;))))))))Any approxment date these shot will come out.ThanksIan Besemer

You guys make some good points on the reflections, and it always did seem a bit strange that in certain addons said reflections were made so prominent. I personally never felt the sensation that the glass was "missing", so the ability to remove such a reflection when simulating with very diffused light would certainly be a very cool little customisable feature.

My thinking on this, and it may or may not be PMDG's opinion, so just take it with a grain of salt...We're always searching for that extra bit to make simulations feel more real. Sometimes it takes exaggerating some aspects to make that happen. Sure the windows in a real 737 may not reflect that much from the flight deck, whether it's due to lighting, possibly some kind of anti-glare coating on the windows or the angle that it's set. But for a large majority of simmers this extra bit of detail makes it feel more real. Sometimes you have to magnify certain aspects to make them feel real on a 2d LCD screen. That's just my opinion.

I fully agree. I would add that the amount of reflection on Vin's image seems very subtle, it is not something that jumps at you and overpower you, I was actually first at loss not sure where the reflection was. I am very sensitive to exaggerated visual effects and I can say I found this one quite mild, it simply tells you there is a pane of glass.
