It was BP=0 in combination with 4x Sparse Multisampling! This mode while it does really look great, puts too much on the GPU, resulting a crash with BP=0. The performance drop without BP=0 is for a me a no-go, meaning I have to find a mode which doesn't put so much strain on the card. And I noticed 8xSQ puts about 70%, which is OK, giving me some headroom, now testing some others... all are stable, so long I don't overload the GPU.
Are you using Inspector? I normally set 8xSQ AA and 16x AF and high quality texture filtering with negative lod bias clamp. Yeah I've flown a bunch now after installing the new drivers + upping the fan speed and *knock on wood* have had zero CTD's since.

Yeah of course I do - that is where I set 8xS + 4xSGSS, which was apparently too much even for GTX580... what GPU >>>AND<<< CPU will ever be enough for FSX?! FSX without shimmering at 35fps... *dream*

I've been experimenting with RejectThreshold setting.I've noticed lowering it gives more performance, closo or same as BP=0, but possibly prevents crashes.Finetuning this setting is what it comes down to. 131072 is 128kb, I don't really know why is this everywhere the same, each machine is different. For me, 131072 doesn't really work well, so I'm looking for better Threshold. The one that would possibly give BP=0 performance and also prevent those crashes, but still allow 8xS and 4xSGSS.You are welcome to experiment with it if you feel the tweaking mood :Big Grin:EDIT: Not much achieved by this. Sorry guys...

Also Ryan, 8xSQ is not really a great mode. It's actually lower quality than 8xS since it has lower Multisampling. As Nick said, Rob Paul to pay for Peter...My PMDG 747 (my fav. test A/C for AA modes, since it shimmers badly if not enough) is shimmering badly with 8xSQ.But... in the end... I'll probably end up running it. Nothing else possible with BP=0.

That's odd because on my end 8xSQ looks much better than 8xS - with the "Q" I have much less shimmering on trees. I think it uses 2x supersampling... I can't remember though.

8xSQ uses 2xSS and 2xMS, where 8xS uses 1xSS and 4xMS. Meaning aircraft edges get less AA with 8xSQ. But instruments and trees get more. Also some other textures, I don't know how to explain it, get better...See this thread:http://www.simforums.com/forums/nvidia-inspector-settings-question_topic38651.html
