Using GPS to get into ILS position...what am I doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

I am using the FS2004 GPS to fly to the proper position for an ILS approach using the "select approach/activate approach" GPS procedure. I then switch GPS to NAV mode, engage the APPR, and fly the ILS approach. All goes well until just before the touchdown point when the aircraft (default 737) begins to accelerate and tries to fly a missed approach. What am I doing wrong? I have searched the GPS tutorial and haven't found anything yet.Thanks.

Are you trying to let the plane autoland? Or are you disconnecting automation to hand fly the last few moments before flare (~50 feet)?I never use the default planes, but when I first got FS9 I was able to use the Boeings and they worked fine. How far above the runway are you when this occurs? The default planes won't flare and autoland, so you must hand fly from a few hundred feet above touchdown, maybe 200 - 300 feet. Also, I heard the default Boeings have issues with autothrottle and autopilot in general.

I am familiar more with GNS530 than with GNS500 but I suspect the problem may be that you are still in the GPS mode. To fly ILS you have to select the VLOC mode, not the GPS mode on your Garmin. It is quite possible you are doing it correctly - but just in case you are not.Michael J.
