Last Air Canada DC-9 Flight!

Hi all,I just got back from the Rockcliffe airfield (CYRO)and the National Aviation Museum where Air Canada flew one of its DC9-32s (Fin No. 711) into the Rockcliffe airport so it could be put on permanent static display at the Museum.The thing is, the runway at CYRO is only 3100 ft x 100 ft with trees and a fence in the final approach parth. They came in and did a low approach to Rwy 27 and then went around and came in for the full-stop landing. Weather was good with winds 230 at 10G15 (bit of a cross-wind). It was a beauty. They put it right on the numbers and managed to stop in only about 2500 ft. Very pretty, very impressive. Very sad (I am a DC-9 fan you could say).Kevin in CYOW

Yes, she's a beauty... The DC-9 was my first aircraft to fly on and is still my favourite.. Shame to see them go...They did an excellent paint job....didn't they?

Yeah it's kinda a sad day to see those old birds retired. They say some will be sold but some will be cut up as scrap. I did have the fortune to ride on one once. I was about 3 years and and can remember this about it.We're seated on board the aircraft for a flight from Toronto to Sudbury. I had the good fortune of the window seat but being a three year old had no real idea of what a plane was about. I can remember looking out the window just as the aircraft was about to leave the gate, when I saw this ground crew fellow plug something into the wall. I thought to myself, and for some odd reason remember it today, that we'd need a really long extension cord to get us all the way to Sudbury:) Anyways, there was two thirds a page on it in the Toronto Star. They had this to say about the aircraft...The "nine" entered service with Air Canada in 1966.It flew over 20,000,000 passengers all over the country and the US.It flew over 3,000,000 flight hours and made 3,000,000 take offs and landings.Air Canada had 50 "nines" in their fleet at one point.Former New Democrat Ed Broadbent manned the Capt's seat mid flight during election campaigning in 1980. The pilots were reprimanded after a photo appeared on the front page of the Globe and Mail.It had a dark side as well. Two aircraft were lost. One in 1978 after an aborted take off in Toronto where two passengers were killed. And another aircraft was lost after diverting to Cincinnati for a cabin fire. 23 people died of smoke inhalation.Fin# 711 (the one flown into Rockcliffe this morning) CF-TLL was the highest time DC-9 in Air Canada's fleet. It went into service in 1968 and logged 81,555 hours. Sad to see it go..CF-AOA

End of an era for AC, I recently worked at the Abbotsford Airport in B.C. during the summer, and I had the opertunity too work on the Canadian Regional (Air Canada Jazz) Fokker F.28 Mk. 1000's before they were retired on Sept 7th. I have a pic of the last Fokker flight from Abbotsford.... You know, I remember that picture of Ed Broadbent, and I remember it being an old DC-3. Better fit for the NDPs socialist image...
