The '3 Bears' of weather engines

Featured Replies

I like weather and depending on my mood, LOTS of weather. A lot of flights I will pull up a RW weather chart, find the worst weather I can, an plan a flight into it, just to fly the approach. The lower the ceiling and the more wind, the better.Except for REX, I have used every weather generator available for FSX over the years, I even beta tested one of them years ago. Being a 'RW" pilot as well, I have a pretty good idea of what clouds should look like and how planes react to wind.Last week while glancing through my daily thread reads, I noticed a one line reference to another weather engine, but it didnt really grab my attention at the time. A few days later I decided to go back and find it and give it a shot, just to satisfy my curiosity. The following is my opinion in case anyone else is interested....The BIG Bear......ASE: A great program but for me, it's TOO much and affects my machines performanceThe Little Bear... Open Clouds: A wonderfull program that works well, but not enough optionsThe Just Right Bear.... FSrealWX: For me, this program is perfect. It gives me the options I want, does exactly what it advertizes, and best of all, it's another FREE program. I am constantly amazed at the people who spend the time and effort to create programs for this hobby, and then provide them to us for just the price of a THANKS! If you like your weather, check this one out....it;s German but there is an option to switch to english on the site......http://www.rs-transl...?page=self&id=2Enjoy ,me and Goldilocks are off for a flight :(

That was me, I was trying to plug FSRealWXLite because I just discovered it a couple weeks ago and thought it was great! The thing is though, whether it is FS9 or FSX, whether it's payware or freeware weather, I always get crazy wind shifts during cruise, which causes my aircraft to swing it's nose violently to the right or left. I wonder if there is a fix for that particular issue, because it's extremely unrealistic. In FS9 I had FSUIPC registered and I still got crazy wind gusts at cruise causing my aircraft's speed to jump or tumble.

Thanks for posting that info! I use FSUIPC registered and with the settings I have, I have 0 problems with wind shifts, here are my settings if you want to try them...

Download the program last night. Have yet to try it, but, I do have a couple of questions. Are you using it on a client computer remote from the FSX computer? I have and use Open Clouds and really enjoy it. I notice a nice increase in FPS when I use OC over the FSX weather engine. Do you see any effect on FPS when using FSrealWX?Also, have you used FSrealWX in a multiplayer environment? If so, how did it work? Thanks

Download the program last night. Have yet to try it, but, I do have a couple of questions. Are you using it on a client computer remote from the FSX computer? Yes, it uses WideFS to connect. They say they are working on using Simconnect as well in a future updateI have and use Open Clouds and really enjoy it. I notice a nice increase in FPS when I use OC over the FSX weather engine. Do you see any effect on FPS when using FSrealWX?No noticible FPS hit here, it's about the same as OCAlso, have you used FSrealWX in a multiplayer environment? If so, how did it work?Fly MP daily, it works fine.

You are right, FSrealWX offers a nice opportunity to stay between the heavy detailed ASE and the very easy Open Clouds. But I had it more than once now that the FSrealWX window goes away after starting the program. I can see it in the task bar but it's "somewhere".When I try that taskbar "move" option, it restarts itself, so I get two taskbar icons but still no program window.I always ran it as admin. This didn't happen on the first few runs of the program, but later. A reinstallation helped to get the window back, but after some flights, it disappeared again. The weather itself and the features looked nice and the additional options over Open Clouds were quite useful.

Hmm. Haven't had any issues here, I guess just make sure you have the latest build, and also run as admin, see if that helps.

Same here, I have it on both machines and it happened yesterday on my FSX machine but so far the remote is ok. It happened to a few others I fly with also. Very weird but a reinstall fixes it.

I had the dev's build so far, admin rights were assigned there. The thing was running fine, only that disappearing window bugged me so far.Maybe they should just change the build number to 1.x. Just%20Kidding.gifMaybe I'll try the normal beta version now, that tool deserves some attention, as you've pointed out correctly.

There's a new dev version out which eliminates my startup problem with the missing program window. Works good so far, worth a donation. This new version now supports Simconnect too. That "lite" version will remain free. Here's the statement.

Fsrealwx lite is / remaining freeware.
http://www.rs-transline.de/index.phpBut some changelog reads like a registered version will come up soon. Whatever that means.

Thanks for the link! Im going to give it a whirl and see how it goes since Open Clouds went from FREE-ware to PAY-ware. I would actually pay for Open Clouds except I dont like the fact it is a subscription.... but all that has already been addressed in another thread.Jim
