May 21, 201115 yr Glad to hear you're enjoying your system, Kaman. I'm loving my 2500K, even if it is drastically held back by my video card.
May 21, 201115 yr Author Guys im building a new rig, after reading this thread my rig is one year old and there is now soooo much new tech out there! Im bidding on this Intel Core i7 980x Processor (Extreme Edition) on ebay does anybody rate it?? At the mo its going for £112, me th highist bidder!!Hi my friend,I'm not an expert but when i was doing my hardware wishlist i was also planning to get an i7 9xx extreme processor , you know the one that has 6 core, but Ryan explained me that there was no need to get such a processor. I5 2500k is made especially for OC'ing. you can't go wrong with it i can tell. and you'll save money as well!Kaman BA Kaman BAPMDG 737 NGX Flight Preparation using EFB, TOPCAT, FSBUILD & AS2012 Leaving the dream ! May 23, 201115 yr Don't waste money on the 980x. I bought one primarily for flight sim, even after reading that it was way overkill, but planned on using it for other apps like Photoshop that could take advantage of the cores and sure enough, I get much better performance out of my 2500k than I ever did out of the 980x. So put that extra money into a better video card or better cooling to overclock your more affordable chip ;-) Tony
May 23, 201115 yr I have just finished building a new i72600K on the latest Z68 X-UD4-B3 board from Gigabyte. Gigabyte GTS580 and FSX installed on a 600GB Vrap. Just defragging with O&O at the mo, but cannot wait to get the old MD11 up in the air for a spin. Also this Z68 board has the new Couger Point chipset so the Sata issues pre B3 are not an issue on this board. The only thing that concerns me is I use a Creative PCie sound card and the slot for this card is right next to the vid card, pretty close to 2 cooling fans, will that be a problem ? Would prefer not to use onboard sound, but if it means creating a heat problem then I will. I am using a Cooler Master Case with excellent cooling fans etc. Any advice would be welcome.CheersJulian Evans

If this wasn't FSX you could probably use the PCIeX8 for your GTX580, but FSX doesn't like that. What kind of GPU temps do you have?
May 23, 201115 yr Commercial Member I've read that trying to keep it below 1.4v is best to extend the life of the CPU. The goal should be to run stable at as low a voltage as possible. Ethan's voltage ideal if you can get that low. It's called stock speed isn't it? ;)Best regards,Robin.

I hope that is in safe limits. I assume also, once my FSX install and tune up is complete, it will rise during flight. So will keep an eye on it.CheersJulian

Are you sure that maximum temp was recorded after running FSX?.EDIT: mmm yeah, I'm retarded. need to read before posting hehe. Ok, those are great temps even for idle operation. you can also try furmark or a graphics benchmark like Unigine Heaven and monitor your temps with MSI Afterburner. Edited May 23, 201115 yr by dazz
May 23, 201115 yr Ethan, I want a screenie of your 5.2GHz - 1.325V OC please! :( Full load with CPU-Z, core temp and all :(+1 never heard of anything like that before!! -Iain Watson-
