FSX PC Wishlist

Recommended Posts

Hello, You may have read my other topic but this is more a hardware topic. I have got most of my PC done but there are still a few things on my wishlist to get. What I am asking for is which would give me the most performance boost. I am probably going to upgrade to Ivy Bridge next year but if I find performance to be good enough then I will wait for a bit. I am probably looking more towards getting a SSD for srt and the monitor but would a new HDD be better, anyway, here is what I am looking at: Buy a new 64GB SSD for intel SRT Brand new HDD for FSXA 24" LED monitor any suggestionWait for Ivy Bridge Just while I am on this topic of hardware could any OC specialist please go onto the "getting fsx to its prime" thread and just take a look at my OC settings. Also on this topic I have the old PC that I would wish to sell for parts. I am not asking weather you would like to buy it, you can if you want, but weather it is worth selling. Currently doesn't vrn get to BIOS so I think it is the PSU that is stuffed. Specs are: Intel C2D E4600 2.0GHznVidia 8400GS 256mbNuman mid tower case GA-P31-S3G2GB DDR2 RAM.420W possibly stuffed PSU.2x IDE DVD drives8x USB1x FirewireKeyboard, mouse and speakers. Pretty big upgrade that I made to my beast now but it was worth it. A friend of mine wants a new PC, really cheap, and I said to him I would fix this with a 420W PSU (can't remember what type), GT 430, 4GB RAM, new 500GB HDD and maybe a new SATA DVD drive. Regards, Andrew Cary

Sell it for $300-$400. Correction, $250-300. You could probably get more but I'd feel guilty. I'd replace the PSU with a cheap one. Purchase something smaller for SRT, 20GB is plenty. Or the Intel 310 Series. It's made specifically for this. You're going to love the upgrade!

You really think its worth more than $250? 64GB is the cheapest I can get at my local store, its a Kingston one. http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/sv100s264g-kingston-64gb-ssdnow-v100-series-sata-trim-p-49225.html?sort=3a Anyway that gives me 24GB of SSD space for other games like Battlefield and Crysis 2 which I must say run like a dream. 32x AA 16x Filtering.

Frankly, I would skip the SRT thing all together and buy a large SSD drive for boot and smaller games. That is if you're dead set on spending money on an SSD. A few people are going to jump in and say that $2 a GB is worth it to save 10 seconds of there valuable lives when loading up the latest Call of DutyDoh.gif . I disagree. I'm running an Intel SSD as my boot drive, and boy what a waste that was. I'd put the money towards controller hardware and another HDD like the Caviar Black 1TB if I could do it over again. Also, were you planning on partitioning an SSD? That's not worth the trouble.

I want SRT so it can speed the whole system up. But will it speed up FSX or am I better off putting money towards Ivy Bridge upgrades.

FSX will show no performance gain. I would spend accordingly.

I would like to have a second opinion on the PC. All the parts new is about $360 So it currently not working so I would say its worth about $200.

I have been looking at this screen since the SSD seems to be a bit of a waste.

Heck no an SSD is not a waste....yes they are more money but look at the read / write time's.
Yes but they won't really increase FSX performance.

I assure you it does...I went from a 300g Raptor in raid 0 to a corsair 256g SSD and load times are cut in half, I'm talking scenery etc. There is more to it than just installing it, you need to enable Trim and set your BIOS to AHCI, if you have a motherboard with 6G/s Sata...even beter.

Of course it has 6gig SATA. I think the monitor will just give me a better feeling in FSX. It won't help with FPS is what I mean. a second loading the textures, small price to pay IMO.
