Tuning a VOR seems to be killing my FPS in the VC

Featured Replies

I'll give you my set up for those who want to try to reproduce this: On the ground at DCA. Setting up for Rwy 1 NATNL1 departure. My performance was pretty good considering the surrounding scenery, but as soon as I tune DCA on both radios and set up my course, I get a significant decrease in performance. When I switch the radios to an inactive frequency, the performance returns to it's previous level.

I had a similar effect approaching PHNL from the north. I'll have to fly the approach again, but when my NAV 1 was set, I went from locked at 30 to 7 (SEVEN!) FPS. I ALT-TABBED out and then back into the sim, and performance was where it should be, locked at 30, again.

Yes, this also happens to me as well. I don't have to be at a particular location, just any location. I'll set up both NAV radios to receive separate VOR signals and with the green CDI courses displaying on the MAP/Navigation Display. That's when I noticed a reduction in FPS (loss of 8-10). WIth my system, my FPS with the NGX is acceptable. But as soon as I utilize both NAV radios as a describe before, I loose FPS. One thing I did to help my FPS loss as an option to use both NAVs, I selected on the EFIS above Navigation display "CTR" to display the round compass "HSI" presentation. This option removed the course lines within the display and seems to not affect my FPS. As far as I notice. Andrew

I'm experiencing the same thing when I tune the NAV radios. Is doesn't matter at which airport, happens everywhere. Good to hear that it is probably not my computer or FSX that is acting strange.

+1 FPS can drop about 5 when putting VOR on NAV But Mouse and squawkbox can drop down 15fps (High FL) and on ground up to 10FPS /Michael

Hi,I've just tested it in flight between KPHL and KJFK.I have tuned both VOR frequencie to OOD VOR 112.80. When the green dash line is displayed on the ND, my FPS drop to less than 10 fps.The only fix for that is to go to aircraft display option and turn off VOR Lines. My fps are back to normal around 30-40 fps.I was trying all sort of tweaks and fsx.cfg optimization to try to find out why my fps were decreasing !!!!!

I guess I should submit a ticket. Just like the previous post said, I've been driving myself nuts trying to figure out this intermittent performance at the gate problem I've been having, and I think it's been because sometimes a frequency was active and other times not.

Chris Hicks

I can confirm this too.As soon as I tuned and identified NAV radios a very noticeble frame drop occurs.

Guys, I've submitted a ticket and they've been unable to reproduce it on their end. The rest of you may need to send tickets to explain your individual scenarios when the problem occurs.

Yes! I noticed that too here. However I think it is only the "show vor radial" option that seems to cause that drop. I was 10 fps at LSGG and it jumps to 20 as soon as I put that option OFF! Try it yourself! Now I do not use that option. Pierre Lainé

Thank you, Pierre, that was one of the things he's asked me to try to see if it made a difference.

Yes turning the "show VOR Course Lines" option to OFF in the CDU's displays option is making the difference.

Ah ha! That explains why my FPS tanked yesterday (30 -> 10) immediately after taking off from KATL toward KCHS. I had tuned the CHS VOR. I kept alt-tab'ing between windows and full screen and the FPS would restore each time for a while. I will try the same filight again tonight with the "Show VOR radials" disabled in the options; to see if it makes a difference as well.

For me too. So far, the guys on Ryan's end of things haven't been able to reproduce it.

Chris and the rest of fellow pilots, I guess I can submit a ticket but from the sound of it, if PMDG is unable to replicate our situation on their systems, then I am a little concerned it won't get addressed and fixed. Is this issue going to distract me from flying this bird? Absolutely not. It's an incredible model/simulation but investing in a product like this, we would like to know that every part of the NGX is working as it should. Believe me, I know producing a product such as this demands countless hours of work from PMDG. I hope maybe in SP1, a certain code from the fix will trigger the NAV issue to dissappear! That would be cool. I'll try to submit a ticket myself. Thanks!Andrew
