Is that 60 euros or 6000 euros ?
I bet he actually meant 60,000 !?
It was €6,000
That would not even be a fraction of the new cockpit wow simply terrific.

Sorry.......................should have been 60,000 euros. 6,000 would only buy the throttle quadrant.

But still 60000 is better than a million , that thing just looks awesome. I had put up a small control system a couple of years back nothing to impressive using an extra keyboard circuit and made switches out of them the only problem was when I put on a switch the same signals on the other keyboard would get executed because the system recognized the other keyboard as a single keyboard :) .

Brings back memories !! When I first started getting involved in home cockpit building we used to get a few old joysticks and take them apartand use them for controlling different parts of the plane. That was about 15 years ago.The PnP panels now are fantastic and well worth the money.

Now that does bring something back from the recent past , I have three joysticks and modified one as a throttle. Yes I know about the PnP and EPIC stuff.

EPIC was the only thing available when I started off but that is not used anymore really.It is too awkward and time consuming.All of the panels from Flightdeck Solutions have their own custom software and it talks directly to FSX and PM over a local network.Everything now is USB 2 and gives no problems at all. The MCP's and EFIS panels available today are first class.Even the autothrottle is magnetically held so that it will trip off on touchdown.

I considered a career in aviation and decided against it. Went into law instead and don't regret it as I'm paying for my PPL myself and still get to fly. I've got a few mates that work in the airlines and they often complain about it. I don't understand the full technicalities but one thing that really bothers them are the "old fashioned flight plans and constant ATC changes which aren't right for modern jets". I've heard some horror stories of people that spent years in training then developed minor medical issues and suddenly all their training was useless. Must also add that I don't believe because one person gets a job as an airline pilot and another person doesn't is purely due to intelligence. In fact the mentioned friend which is now an airline pilot performed significantly worse than me at university - it was his parents money that is the reason he is now in that jet (okay, maybe not only reason but it certainly helped immensely). Obviously some level of skill comes into it but with enough money behind you and good health there is no reason you couldn't fly these things. That is my understanding of it anyway, and I state it as (a slightly jealous) opinion and not fact! Not meaning to take anything at all from real world airline pilots, I have all the respect in the world for them, just that I don't believe a prerequisite is any particularly high amount of intelligence....Though I certainly wouldn't disagree that a good education does help!

Luck and the path of life is a big factor for everyone in any field , but again that's my feeling and experience. The only thing I watch on youtube are the fighter jets and wonder why I didn't get there

Qantas have a pilot training scheme. Like a cadet programme. It costs a fortune to go to and you need to have the highest grades possible in school. They very rarely take pilots from their own programme. They only take someone if they really stand out from the crowd. So the limited number of people that get in can waste all that money and time and Qantas will turn around and say no
Actually you don't need high grades the requirements for the Qantas cadetship were (it is currently suspended):
  • A pass in Year 12 English, OR a pass in a suitable humanities/social science type subject at Degree level; and
  • A pass in a suitable Year 12 Mathematics subject, OR a pass in a suitable Degree level Mathematics subject; ORA fully completed Bachelor Degree in any discipline;
  • Be currently completing the relevant Year 12 subjects or other education criteria.

They take over 90% of those who make it into the program- just like the vast majority of direct entry new hires get through their probation period. Results in psychometric and aptitude testing and interviews is what determines selection not iq intelligence or academic results. Leadership qualities, ability to work in a team, persistence/determination in pursuing a flying career and ability to easily get on with people are qualities they look for. I think it is much the same for airline cadetships around the world. Last I heard was 2-3% of applicants were successful. Jon
