How do I save my AVSIM password??

Recommended Posts

I know there is a way to do this but I hate having to enter my password each time I log in. Isn't there a way to save your password? I admit I'm a bit ignorant to this stuff.....

Well, it sucks when no one answers a question you have, so I'll take a stab at it.The forums have the ability to "remember you" so you don't have to log in every time. However, the forums need to be sure that you are who you say you are. To do this, they install a "cookie" on your system. Essentially, a cookie is a file that contains information about your account so that when you visit the forums, the system sees your cookie, and knows who you are. However, for security and privacy reasons, most browsers disable cookies. Here's a method that lets you have cookies enabled for only one site (the Avsim forums)These instructions are for IE, since 96% of people use it for their webbrowsing.Click on Tools > Internet Options...http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3dc6a5284ebee6b2.jpgClick on the Privacy tab at the top of the page, and then click the Edit button near the bottom of the page.http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3dc6a5364ef4af9a.jpgNow we'll tell Internet Explorer that we will allow cookies from Avsim. In the box, type in avsim.com (no www or http). Then, click the Allow button.http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3dc6a53b4f1e5bf9.jpgYou have now added Avsim to your Allow Cookies list. Now, once you have logged in, you will not have to worry about logging in when you visit again. One word of caution- anyone who logs on to the Avsim forum with your computer will assume your identity, so be sure to click the Logout button when you are done.

Hey, thanks a lot for the response. I use IE and the strange thing is that I don't have a Privacy tab under that option. I have all the other tabs that you show but not that one.(???????) Do you know why that mught be? I have version 5.5. Thanks again!Eric

Eric, sorry I missed your post earlier.I'm not sure why you don't have a privacy tab in your IE. I seem to remember it being there in 5.5 also.I wanted to add to what Mike had mentioned. His info on cookies and the settings in IE are spot on, but I don't think he mentioned how you actually tell the forum to remember your login.Once you login, you need to go to your "user menu", Link is at the top of the forum page. From there, click on Edit your preference, and then look for the "Automatically login..." setting and make sure you have it on "yes" and then click the update button at the bottom. It will make you login once more I believe before it starts remembering you. If you have problems with it, let me know. One word of cation is that just because you set the forum to remember your login, it is important that you don't forget it because I force everyone to login again about once a month so they remember their login info. This is also to keep all the permanent login files cleaned up.
