Motherboard CPU upgrade sanity check before purchase

Going to update my No:2 Computer (and make it my No:1 I hope) Out:

  • Intel Q9400
  • Gigabyte EP45-DS3P
  • Corsair 4GB DDR2
  • Gigabyte GTX 260

In:

  • Asus P8Z68-V PRO
  • Intel 2500K
  • Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800(1600), CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.5V
  • Corsair H100 Cooler
  • MSI 580GTX

Anyone see any problems before I order? Aready have the following:

  • 126Mb ssd - boot
  • 256Mb ssd - FSX
  • 300Mb Raptor - Scenery
  • Thermaltake 700W Toughpower PSU
  • SoundBlaste X-Fi Titanium Soundcard
  • Coolermaster Case

I don't see any problems at all. I just don't know why you would pair slow ram with such a high end system. Why not something like this?

Go for the ram Corey suggested and you're good to go. Remember that the Corsair H100 is a 240mm radiator, so make sure there is a place for it in your case.

Go for the Corsair H80, the performance with the H100 is minimal. I have just switched from H50 to H80, and I am very impressive with the numbers.

The review I posted shows the H100 beating the NH-D14 by about 7.5C. No Archon in that review, but the NH-D14 (or perhaps the Silver Arrow) is the best air cooler available to my knowledge, so that should put the H100 ahead of the Archon by 7.5C at the very least. Honestly, I just skimmed the review you posted. Just make sure that the reviewer tests the coolers at least three times. Re-seating the cooler between each test is critical as sometimes you just get a bad mount. And as always, never take one review as the hard truth - though some reviews are just much better than others. I do particularly like the OC3D review, though - I think it was well done and unbiased as far as I can tell. Here's a decent review of the Archon in comparison with the NH-D14.

Thanks for that. Not sure why the reviews are inconsistent but I think that the Xbit review was the only one around in January when I purchased the Archon. Still it seems to cope okay. I will look again when Ivy Bridge appears.

You can't go wrong with the closed loop WC systems. They will be reliable, wont leak and do the job very nicely.

An alternative viewpoint is that with Sandy Bridge the constraint for overclocking is voltage rather than thermal. When I primed at 5Ghz and 1.44V (HT off) it was the voltage I worried about and not the temperature which remained below 80C. Thoughts?
