The 737 had been on the market for almost a year with hardly any orders being placed when Lufthansa, who were looking for a replacement for the 727, made some enquiries. They decided to buy two of the then new 200 models that Boeing had announced hoping it would be more attractive. The Lufthansa crews loved it so much that the company ordered 40.
