Probably, earlier i7s use a FCLGA1366 socket, more recent generation i7s use a LGA1155 socket. You can check it out easily enough though, using CPU-z: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html to test your motherboard capabilities, and then look at the specs of the processor you are considering on Intel's site: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/homepage.html Al

Ill for the 990 Gulftown, dont have time to start fitting new Mobo now, and cost of new mobo plus 2600K will probs come close to 990 any way. socket 1366 only just arrived, and now already, all the buzzz is 1155, cant keep up. To be honest i already ordered 990, too late to turn back now. Barely have time to fly this days, never mind having to change mobo. maybe when iam ready to upgrade 1.5 years time, socket 1033 will be all the buzzzz then. Thanks for the tips guys

Sure you can't return or even sell the 990? Surely you could explain to whoever you bought it from that you want the 2600K and 1155 mobo instead of the 990. It should still come out much cheaper and much better for FSX.

Why did you have to get the 2600k. Could have saved and got the 2500k and nice mobo, still less than a 990.

That won't be an upgrade, but a side grade, overclock your i7 975 and it will give immense performance. And, no, that 2600k won't be compatible with your motherboard, your mobo uses LGA1366 socket whereas the 2600k requires LGA1155 platform.

I think a 2500k at 4.8GHz if you get a good one would be an upgrade on top of a i7 975 at whatever frequency it was at. 2500k/2600k, no difference to FSX. 2mb's of cache, minuscule difference.

False That's not to say the i7-975 won't provide very good performance, though. The 990 is such a waste.

Of course. I'm not sure where Prakhar is getting all of his information.
