October 4, 201114 yr Pennsylvania company has won a $1.35 million prize from NASA for developing a highly efficient airplane power by electricity.Pipistrel-USA.com of State College earned the top prize in the CAFE Green Flight Challenge, sponsored by Google, NASA announced Monday. The plane developed by Pipistrel doubled the fuel efficiency requirement for the competition: Flying 200 miles in less than two hours while using less than a gallon of fuel per occupant or the equivalent in electricity. The winning plane used a little more than a half-gallon of fuel per passenger for the 200-mile flight. The fuel efficiency exceeds 400 mgp (that's four hundred miles per gallon). The twin-fuselage offers added efficiency for taking in-laws along. Cheers, - jahman.
October 5, 201114 yr Moderator It's worth noting that the actual aircraft was designed and built by Romanians. They had to "partner up" with the Penn State University in order to have an "American component" and be eligible to enter the competition... Nonetheless, it was a remarkable achievement! Also of interest is that it is a 4 seat aircraft (2 in each cockpit). Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
October 8, 201114 yr I hope they accomplish this soon with every day automobiles. For ever mile that thing flies per gallon, is what I pay in dollars a month for gas!
