Landing clearance

Recommended Posts

In various airliner videos I've repeatedly seen that "cleared for landing" is received less than 2 miles from the runway threshold, so I wonder what the latest point during a normal landing is (DH? MDA?) at which a landing clearance must have been issued?

Passing over the threshold is about the latest point to accept a landing clearance. Sometime ATC advises you to expect a late landing clearance which means between 200-500ft.Z.b. die Wiener machen das ganz gern...

In an airliner, if you dont have landing clearance by the outer marker (about 5 miles), Id be contacting the tower to see if they are still awake :-)

Indicent? Dissatisfaction? Huh? Why would it be important to get a landing clearance on a 5nm final? As long as the runway is occupied you don't get a landing clearance (in Europe).Their's no way to get a landing clearance on a 5nm final!!! As I mentioned before, a 'late' clearance is between 200-500ft.In case of a go-around at 5 miles you still have to follow the missed approach procedure which leads you to the threshold anyway....

In the peak at Heathrow it's not unusual to see 3 or 4 aircraft on final approch - on a clear evening looking back along the approach the landing lights can be stacked up above each other. I understand the official interval is 2 min but that 90 sec can be achieved.

Landing clearance must be received prior to DH, or the aircraft must initiate a go-around.Cheers,- jahman.
