Criss Cross the Rockies VATSIM Event + NGX

Featured Replies

Hi guys!Well, yesterday was the annual Criss Cross the Rockies event on VATSIM, as you may have known. I decided I've flown the NGX long enough offline that I'd be fine flying it online. So, I decided to go from Salt Lake City (KSLC) to Denver (KDEN) via Denver/Salt Lake City ARTCC's recommended route.Putting the route and setting up the FMC was a breeze, but asking for clearance was hard since Delivery at SLC had logged off and so did Ground, so everything was up to the tower. LOL! He asked everybody asking for clearance to only readback the squawk code.I took off SLC and was handed off to SLC approach, who vectored me around. All went well, although I was expecting SLC approach to let me resume own navigatio.10 minutes later, I got handed off to SLC center who completely blew me off course. I saw my screens, and I was about 60 miles from my planned route. I asked SLC center if I could start turning towards my waypoints, bu he said I was not in his airspace. WHAT? I went on VATSPY and I was clearly still in SLC center.A couple of minutes later, he handed me off to Denver center, who immediately (after me contacting him) asked me if I was vectored by SLC center because I was way off course. I said yeah, and that SLC center made a mistake. To wrap up, about 30 minutes later I was given to Denver approach, who set me up for a VISUAL, NIGHT approach for runway 26 (or whatever it is). Obviously, the landing was horrible but I was able to unload the passengers unharmed at the gate. tongue.pngAnyway, I think it was a pretty good first flight. If you want to see what I did, go here: http://vataware.com/....cfm?id=8685696 You can see at the map that I was indeed blown of course.PS: I just realized that Denver International's runways kinda form a Swatiska. huh.png

I was going to attend that event but something came up and it sounds like I didn't miss much with only tower at SLC for ground ops and centers giving you a night visual Shocked.gifHow were the winds? I flew the NGX on VATSIM the day before and also landed on RWY 26 but the winds were blowing 31 kts @44 gusting right at my nose, causing me to go VREF + 15 and taking up half the 12000 foot runway because I was surprised about how much lift I got 30 feet above Whistle.gifUsually the controllers on VATSIM are excellent and I never do a NGX flight offline. If your flying offline, you don't know what your missing!BTW, get rid of that SB4 and (virtually) burn it. I couldn't get FSInn to work for awhile and I quit flying VATSIM for a few months because of all those error messages giving me CTDs. When I tried FSInn again, I allowed the FSInn programs through (listed on some pinned forum topic somewhere) my firewall and it worked. I really hope someone comes up with a good free client soon because FSInn is faaar from perfect.

I took part in that event along with several friends, and I heard several of your radio transmissions. There was only one Salt Lake Center controller, who for a time handled most everything. and was clearly overloaded and frustrated. Given the amount of traffic and other problems, he did a fantastic job, but several guys did get left out to dry and I'm sorry you were one of them. I can tell you that this is not typical of all the events on VATSIM, and wouldn't have happened if there had been at least one more Center controller. Poor guy, we all felt really bad for him, but acknowledged that he did a tremendous job, especially given the circumstances. If you're new to VATSIM, looking for a highly positive experience with seasoned controllers, my advice is to fly in the Boston, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Minneapolis, Oakland, LA, and Albuquerque ARTCCs. Not trying to offend anyone, just calling it like I see it. Welcome to online flight, it's a whole new world! Next, try shared cockpit on VATSIM, almost like flying for real!

Denver center had though Denver Ctr Hi and Denver Ctr Lo, which was cool. Both were awesome, IMO.I like flying in Seattle. They have awesome ATCs there. I'm also just now joining ZHU ARTCC (Houston), so come fly with us (when I get my controller ratings!). I'm not even a clearance delivery. LOLYou can do shared cockpits in VATSIM?! In the NGX?! The winds were calm. My cruising alt. was FL280, so I didn't experience much of that wind.SB4 is fine for me now, execpt that I run it externally (from start menu instead of the Addons menu in FSX) because I heard it stops those CTDs, and it worked for me. The annoying thing about that though is that you must Alt + Tab when you want to transmit (having the SB4 window on top).I tried FSInn, but I couldn't get the aircraft models for other pilots to work. I heard (this WAS verified) that VATSIM is making a new client, and hopefully it is good.
