Goodbye MS Flight (sim)

Recommended Posts

Its like saying goodbye to an old friend.. I started using the MS series back when FS4 was the latest and greatest.. In fact, i probably still have the box and diskettes somewhere for it.. I remember flying in just specific regions that had been made, then the HUGE step up to airports all over the world and finally EVERY airport in the world.. Like most of the diehards here i remember getting FSX the day it came out.. I couldnt get it home and loaded fast enough.. I molded the systems i built around the running of FSX..I guess what i am trying to get at is this.. The flight sim series has been improvement upon improvement.. Getting better and better and more realistic as time goes on.. It is a very amazing program, not perfect but no sim will ever be.. I am very debating on if i will be taking the step to MS Flight.. It is down stepping to regional again, and then if you have to purchase other areas on top of that.. I have never given the "competition" more than about 10 minutes of demo time.. And it takes some getting used to with new buttons and commands.. But i am wondering if now is the time to make the switch..Guess we will just have to wait and see what the final MS product turns out to be..

None of us knows whether this is true at this time. It is simply a speculation (aka: wild-assed guess!). Your last sentence is absolutely correct however. Until release of 'Flight' or at least until MS publishes a feature list, nothing definite can be known...

What is it that makes people jump to all these negative conclusions?? Let's wait for Microsoft's official statement regarding the coverage of Flight. Looks like Bill is the only person that makes sense around here...

"What is it that makes people jump to all these negative conclusions??"Exactly. That said - I'm trying to figure out, like everyone else, what Microsoft is thinking. I'm not going to presume to have any answers - but when I think about the audience for a "Hawaii-only" scenario, it seems very limited. Specifically, at first, to those who are satisfied with what can be seen as an extremely limited environment, both in terms of geography and weather. It feels like that would be a -really- deluxe version of Pilotwings 64 or something. The other draw may be the relative realism of the aircraft and scenery, but I doubt that it would be so far ahead of what we're seeing now that it would sway those who routinely fly either long hauls or those who look for a lot more variety in their destinations. So, I have to assume the pessimism is high because of the context - here, on a board where many members are not only really serious about aviation but are also looking for real, meaningful progress in a sim to which they've devoted many resources in terms of time and money.

Well, if the 10gb number is really accurate (FSX was 14gb) then it's possible that 10gb covers Hawaii + the USA or something like that. In that case, it would be disappointing for some, but at least still viable as a simming platform. I personally only fly in the US/Caribbean 99% of the time. As long as the area modeled is big and diverse enough for airline operations, I could still use it. Europeans would crap a brick of course and I understand why.

Why one or the other .... i hope they both are good.

Well not quite, but nearly ! I keep coming back to this. Why, when MS have the machanics in place for a whole world simulator would they issue a new version and in the process, cut out 99.9% of the globe and also in the process lose (probally) a large majority of their paying customers ? Does not make any sense !

I dunno what it is with this forum, but every time MS releases something, people see new 'clues' that seem to tell them that Flight is going to be awful. Apparently people are so scared of not getting exactly what they want that they are depressed over the idea that Flight might not be global, include cloud shadows, have deer running in the forest or whether the cigarette-lighter will be simulated correctly. The thing is: we're not sure what it will be, and while we can try to tell MS what we'd like to see, communication isn't exactly their forte recently..This forum is so weird.. MS releases some fantastic screenshots, and yet again (predictably) there are some people with their pants in a tizzy and all depressed because they fear their game isn't going to live up to their expectations.. maybe you should get out of the house a bit more often or something, but this is just pathetic.. lol

With X-plane 10 looking pretty damn good im not too bothered about FLIGHT at the moment.I just dont know why MS dont just state their intentions properly instead of half baked snippets every 30-60 days. It's got really boring.Do they have something to hide, or are they holding back with some mammoth revelations...haha.Speculation has gone on too long...

Payt.. If the forum is so "weird" why are you contributing?? This is a hobby, same as basket weaving, blanket knitting or stamp collecting.. Boring as can be to some, but others cant get enough of it..As for "pants in a tizzy" look at how people take sports events when their team looses.. The follow up event is called a RIOT..Flight might be the greatest thing since sliced bread.. Or could be as others have said "white elephant".. We don't know what it will be until it is released.. But in the mean time it sure is fun to hear everyone's ideas on what it may be..

I, like all of you, have not one answer to any of the questions I have seen and any of the boards. What I do know is Microsoft is spitting in the face of it's customers. There is no argument to be made againt that statement. I know a bit about advertising and it is one thing to build excitement and all that garbage they teach in school, but that is not what is going on here. They are laughing at you as sure as Hawaii will be modeled in the sim. I do know this, at least for me, and that is this had better be one hell of a sim or I can be very happy with FSX or P3D for many years. This time around it is personal!!

I would find it rather bizarre to think that developers of a specialist and niche game package like flight simulator would not be aware of the most popular web forum supporting the hobby. Regardless of the direction the project is directed to take, the developers themselves (one would think) would to some extent be in tune with the core user community. Why else would you be doing that job. I would hope that the people on the project are passionate about flying, and logically, simulation, if that's what they have signed up to do. Sad it would be if this was not the case.Come to think of it, given that the 'target' audience of Joe 'Ignoramous' Bloggs out there wouldn't even know of Flight's upcoming release next year, then who exactly would MS be talking to on their website when inviting people to email them with suggestions. Surely their core audience?
