Stephen,Thanks for your response to my question. So I guess I'm a voiding the local shop. Did you build your own system or did you order it online. Thanks again for answering the question and the warm welcome.Mike
I order from online shops, which have pickup, so I just drive there and pick my stuff (or I sometimes deliver from Amazon). There is a nice hardware forum here where you can get awesome advices what is right for FSX, and I suggest you start there!Building on your own is definitely the best way to go.

Hi MichaelDoes anyone run FSX windowed? I've seen this bit of advice before but always completely ignore it. I don't understand how you could run FSX in a window?! Spend thousands on addons that improve realism, and then run the lot with a windows border around it? Um... ok. All immersion gone for me. Which is why I've always been fascinated by the bit of advice regarding running in a window... I think I'd honestly rather not run it at all.
For that reason I also use fullscreen mode.Beside that my fps are also higher.I still am looking for a way to monitor VAS and Total Used Memory when running in fullscreen mode.Even a utility running over a LAN would be fine. If VAS is OK but my system running out of total memory I could install 16Gb instead of 8Gb.....

I run FSX in windowed mode. Couldnt imagine running it fullscreen tbh. How do you access your charts, your web browser, your chat programs, your pilot client etc?
For viewing charts in-flight, fullscreen with only one pc, try PDF Kneeboard from the library here. Works great.Real pilots don't have web browsers or chat programs. Stuff like FSINN runs fine in fullscreen FSX.I really can't imagine simming in a window. Switching between applications while flying? It really ruins the whole thing, surely. *Thump* yep I'm sitting at my pc, not in an aeroplane like my brain had started believing for the last 10 minutes. Nah... not for me hey. You should try it :)

I know about pdf kneeboard. I'm not going to sit and stare out the windscreen for three hours at cruise lol. I'm going to use my computer to do other things in the mean time

I've always run in windowed mode. I took the time to learn how to banish the "windows border around it" so there's no visual distraction at all. I do run multiple monitors, so I've really no choice in the matter, but......it's not that difficult to do... :)

No axe to grind here - I do not have the NGX737 as i don 't fly the heavies much but I've been rteading posts all over various forums about OOM and system locking, etc from systems that were previously just fine. The common factor seems to be the NGX. Maybe it's just the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. If you don't use it and things work and use it and they don't - that might be a good starting point.Vic

This is one of those " different strokes for different folks" questions. Probably for just as many that do not run in windowed mode, there will be an equal number that do prefer to run in a windowed mode.I am with you - I have been running FSX since it's release, and have always only run it in full screen mode. I have two monitors, and I use my secondary monitor to put my radio stack, gps, atc command , and kneeboard, for my flight, leaving my main screen for just my vc.I do not have a need, at least at this time, to have other seperate " windows" available to me on my secondary monitor. Perhaps should that need arise someday, I might consider switching to window mode. Not a thing wrong with either way really, just a matter of personal preference.

Hi Bill:I've misplaced my link to info on how to minimize visual borders around a windowed task session (ex: FSX); got that link for folks here ? Angel.gifGaryGB

+1That would indeed change the game. My biggest gripe with the borders is when flying at night... they're much brighter than anything in the "world" in the sim. If you can kill the borders, have a black desktop, hide the taskbar, and then arrange your windows so that you have a sort of "stack" of apps next to FSX, I can see that working nicely.Edit: And an appeal to Microsoft to please have proper browser functionality in the kneeboard for MS Flight! I set up my FS9 kneeboard to show metars and whatnot... but the FSX kneeboard can't go online.
http://www.actualtools.com/windowmanager/Try to use Actual Window Manager. It has more than 50 handy tools to help you in daily routine window manipulations and among others it lets to remove title bar and border from any window. You need to create a specific rule for your game and check all items you want to removeHave not tried it, I run in full screen

Oh Lord, I just knew someone would ask... Gary, I read about how to get rid of the top menu bar over a year ago, and couldn't begin to remember where I read about it or what specifically I had to do. All I do remember is that it wasn't that difficult at all. unsure.pngblush.png

Does the F11 key toggle the menu bar on/off in the sim, I know it does with ordinary windows ?....only asking.....silly me, course it doesn't. It gives one of the view changes...Duh !I know the Task Bar can be "Auto Hid" via its properties panel. And left/right scroll bars are not displayed anyway, if I remember rightly.

Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Both, ordered the parts online and built the machine(s). Really ask questions in these forums and learn the difference between the good, the bad and the ugly before acquiring new equipment. There are a lot of helpful people around here with excellent advice. Although there are conflicting opinions from time to time, most work it out, and eventually end up understanding and agreeing on the essential core elements. Anyway, most importantly, have fun and enjoy your hobby!Kind regards,

Today I have done severaltest flights from Amsterdam to Frankfurt.A smaller or higher value of the LOD seems to make no significant difference at all.As you can see VAS is approaching 4 GB, where Out of Memory will appear. In flight above detailed scenery it is already around 3.7 Gb, but when approaching it is already up to 3.965 Gb.Because this is an Windowed mode with a screen a bit smaller than fullscreen I was able to finish the flight normally. All suggestions to get the VAS down are welcome.VAS%205.jpg

I say start testing from beginning. Remove addons to see which one is using so much memory. That LOD has no impact is very unusual, LOD has most of impact on VAS and in my tests it has proven to be a cause for high VAS usage. Each and every time. But what you still don't realize that you are running such a wide screen configuration, with bloom enabled, with apparently lots of very very high settings, addons enmass and you still wonder that your VAS is that high? C'mon man, it ain't rocket science to understand that...
