Face it..sims are a niche market. MS goes where the money is

The real question is, what is wrong with FSX? I think it still has ten years of life in it, as the very LEAST. Who needs arcade xbox live games for windows FLIGHT demo?
- popup autogen- flat clouds- no shadows- not too pretty textures- odd/wrong landclass- sticking out runways- bad performance- mirco stuttersare the first that come to mind. When it comes to the actual flying it's quite okay though when you have the PMDG 737NGX and for instance the Bay Tower RV-7. :wink:BTW I am not saying that MS Flight will change all the above: I am just saying that FSX isn't that good as some people (suddenly) think.

This trend has already started with games like Bejeweled.
It's a better direction than MOAR GRAPHIKS > GAMEPLAYZ besides Bejeweled and the like are just a different genre and they have their place.

The point is that Bejeweled was around $20 when it came out and one artist and one programmer can put that together in no time. Why create something more complex that takes 50 people and two years to accomplish? The masses want Bejeweled, nothing more...as Jobs would have said...they just don't know it yet.

There is money in niche markets, just not as much as in a mass market. People make products for niche markets because they cannot reach those customers with products having mass appeal. The niche product also tends to have a higher per unit price. But It doesn't make any sense to me to take a niche product and try to make it appeal to a mass audience. You lose your niche customers and there are better and easier ways to sell to the mass audience. It looks like what happened here is that some manager or group of managers decided they simply were not interested in the moderate profits available in catering to the desires of a relatively small customer base. So they have tried to take the product in different direction.Of course it is possible that MS could decide to start selling addons for the niche crowd, but it seems unlikely -- it would go against the grain of what they have set out to in the first place. And could you imagine how many "micro-addons" it would take to get Flight just to the level of default FSX in terms of coverage and functionality? Who would have to patience to install all that stuff and how much would it cost?I have no interest in Fight as it currently appears. I will have to stick with FSX or its derivatives. It would be nice to have something like FSX with better graphics, but I am reasonably content with FSX as it is now with the various addons I installed. I can't see much point in all this collective hand wringing about Fight. A big disappointment for sure, but it is what it is and i doubt anything will change that. I can't imagine MS is in any way surprised by the reaction in this community.

How much do you game?Because regardless of what you think not everyone in this world is selfishly motivated by money alone, some take pride in their passion for creating. Just like the music and movie industry, sure there are the giant corporate factories pumping out rubbish with the sole purpose of inflating their bank accounts but they are only a superficial ponyshow riding on the true arts, if you spend a little time looking you can still find plenty of genuine articles. There are a lot of big successful gaming houses are not in it for the sole purpose of profit, take Bethesda for example or hell even Valve put out some creative original titles. If what you were saying was true then why isn't the entire gaming industry full of angry birds rip-offs? Just because Mcdonalds can make massive profits off selling $2 burgers do we have no more high class resturaunts? Of course not.

Paul Lange (PC12) is the Lead Product Manager for Flight, and is an actual pilot, as are several others on the Flight team. It hasn't seemed to make all that much difference, eh?

No one disputes the facts as to where they are heading. But no person of substance also lays down and just plays dead after they were loyal supporters of a money making franchise for 25 years. To play dead is to give up.I for one am not ready to do that yet. People complained about FSX, and they tried as best they could to fix it. People complained about Vista and they did indeed fix it. I expect this reaction by this loyal community will be heard and responded to in at least some way. I also look for the first signs of that to happen very quickly. Nobody likes a PR disaster and we do represent a main chunk of immediate and much needed initial revenue.Bob - Las Cruces, NM

Your position appears to be echoed as the reality begins to sink in for those who've now had time to "digest" the information presented in this forum...

Who is Mr Kipling? Is he the one makes exceedingly good ones? If so, then you are old as I.

If it's such a niche market why did Microsoft stick with it for 20+ years?

Flight Simulator isn't a niche product. It's is one of the best selling games of all time.

Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

How old ?--- "FLIGHT" Beta testing reminds me of Testing "SUPERCAR" ( but not nearly so exciting !!)

Great point...The goal is to keep us a bay by saying we're irrelevant, not large enough to matter, small compared to the larger customer base. Hogwash... You hear these things enough you start to believe it which I do not. :Hmmmph:We're the backbone of the franchise which kept it afloat for so long hence Flight is doomed out the gate. Now I'm off to watch this promo that just came in my email... :(http://flyawaysimulation.com/images/media/8913/microsoft-flight-gameplay/

Exactly, why is it some people keep saying it's a niche market and yet MS had to release a whole new run of keys for FSX DVDs after selling out the initial batch, surely this says the market is bigger than even they anticipated.
