mystery files in my windows directory.

Recommended Posts

Guys, I got a new HD for Xmas and am porting some files over tothe new bigger drive to free up some space on the older one. In my windows directory (WinXP Home), I have a lot of files that are named like this:$NtUninstallQ307869$Some of these are pretty old...almost a year old. What are they? Are these restore points? Can I blow them away and if so, whats the best way to do i? These things look pretty large. (200 MB each in some cases.)ThanksEric

Check your Windows Add/Remove Programs menu for these files. You could remove them but you might then have big problems. I have quite a few of these files also. I wouldn't recommend removing them by just deleting the folder, even if Windows will allow you to delete them. However, if you take the chance and delete them, let us all know what happens!:-lol

They are uninstalls for service updates from MS. The Q###### can be searched at MS to find out what the fix does. Most of them are security updates and if you installed SrvPak 1 there will be one named$NtServicePackUninstall$. If you uninstall them via the uninstallers they will restore the files they replaced.

Understood that these are uninstall files. However my PC runs very stably at the moment. Some of these files date to last february. Is it safe to just blow away the uninstall file folders directly? I dont need to reverse the updates on something so old. All advice appreciated.Eric
