January 22, 201214 yr Hi,Finally have rig that is on top of the notch for FSX. Really quite happy with the performance. But I'm just wondering if I can still get more out of it. You can see my hardware specs below. In heavy circumstances (Aerosoft Airports like EHAM, LFPG...), with bad weather, maxed out scenery with UTX, GEX, REX, in the NGX, I'm getting around 27-30 fps on the ground. And around 30-35 fps in the air, around 40-50 fps in cruise. A few bad things I"m noticing though, is that I'm still seeing stutters, but I think that's because of my HDD. What's the recommend HDD for FSX (a one that is not too expensive?). Or is there another way to reduce stutters (without an FPS limiter, because 30 fps is just not it yet. Above 35 fps I'm really happy.)I've got a tweaked FSX.cfg, with UsePools=0 ( I always use this as I'm seeing much better performacne than with UsePools=1, never understood the point of Bufferpools, so what does it actually do?) Also have HIGHMEMFIX=1, TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096, AffinityMask=14 etc.Just wondering if I can even get more out of it.Thanks! Edited January 22, 201214 yr by arjenfsx Arjen Vandervelde
January 22, 201214 yr Apparently switching from 8xs to 8xq setup in inspector can reduce stutters. I haven't tried it but some people have posted that recently. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
January 22, 201214 yr Author Apparently switching from 8xs to 8xq setup in inspector can reduce stutters. I haven't tried it but some people have posted that recently.Ok thanks, I'll try this. But do you think I might get more out of my FSX rig, in terms of FPS? 25-30 fps is what I'm getting under hard circumstances, with bad weather, heavy scenery, UTX, GEX and REX, in the NGX. In the air getting around 30-40 fps, and in cruise around 40-50. Arjen Vandervelde
January 22, 201214 yr Doubtful, unless you lower a setting or two. Is water on 2xLow? No point ever going higher than that & it's a big killer. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
January 22, 201214 yr Author Doubtful, unless you lower a setting or two. Is water on 2xLow? No point ever going higher than that & it's a big killer.Yes it is. I also have lightbloom disabled. All settings are maxed out instead of AI traffic and mesh complexity which is set to . I also noticed that without UTX I'm getting around 35 fps on heavy airport sceneries, with with UTX around 25-30. UTX seems to be a big FPS killer. Arjen Vandervelde
January 22, 201214 yr It can be, depending how you have it set up. Some of the settings are harmless whereas a few others can be hard hitters if you get greedy with them. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64

Am I seeing normal performance for my rig? I have tweaked FSX.cfg. Because if not, there must be something wrong with my hardware. Cuz I've heard people saying with a similar setup as mine, that they are able to get around 40-50 fps. Well, I'm only able to get this at default airport sceneries. At add-on airport sceneries I'm seeing around 30 fps. At some 25-30. In cruise (just did a check), it hops around between 40 and 60 fps. Arjen Vandervelde
January 22, 201214 yr Depends on settings, they may not be pushing theirs as hard as yours. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
January 22, 201214 yr Author Depends on settings, they may not be pushing theirs as hard as yours.Settings are maxed out except for lightbloom, water (which is on LOW2X), and AI traffic which is off as I fly online. Ground scenery shadows are off also. Just a thought, I'm upgrading soon to a Crucial M4 64 GB SSD for my OS, and a WD Caviar Blue 250GB SATA3 for FSX. Might a new HDD increase performance also? Because I currently have a very bad WD Caviar Green 5400 rpm. Arjen Vandervelde
January 22, 201214 yr I think an HDD could improve a bit the smoothness and loading times, and also reduce blurries. If it's in your budget, i would get an SSD dedicated to fsx, it would be the best. Check what this guy managed to do Edited January 22, 201214 yr by nikita
January 22, 201214 yr only on stutters associated with texture loading. HD's don't do much of anything for frames Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
January 22, 201214 yr Author I think an SSD for FSX might not be inside my budget, at least, I have to wait another month or two. Because I'll need a 128 GB SSD for FSX, and a 64 GB SSD for OS. Arjen Vandervelde
January 22, 201214 yr 10krpm drives aren't too far behind SSD's. I use a 320 velociraptor for the OS & a 128 SSD for fsx. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
January 22, 201214 yr Author 10krpm drives aren't too far behind SSD's. I use a 320 velociraptor for the OS & a 128 SSD for fsx.Yes those are nice HDD's. But unfortunately because of the waterflood in Thailand that recently happened (the HDD's are produced there), the availability is very low, at least in the Netherlands it is. 1 Velociraptor costs 1300 euros! :oBut do you think a 7200 RPM HDD will also reduce stutters? And also, just trying to get a little more out of my OC. My 4.5 GHz was always very stable. 12 hours in Prime95 for 12 hours. I now used a video for 4.7 GHz. It recommended 1.35V, but I got 2 BSOD's already at 1.35V. So I now tried 1.37 and so far it's been running fine in Prime95 for 45 minutes. Just wonder if it's normal that an i5 2500K needs so much power to achieve stable overclock. Also, always worried about my PC. Temps are fine, but those 2 BSOD's make me worry a lot. I hope it doesn't do any harm and it just happened because my voltage was too low... January 22, 201214 yr I use a 320 velociraptor for the OSDitto, and also for FSX. I was using a Kingston SSD but it didn't set me on fire tbh.Arjen, I get the FR's you speak of (except in very heavy payware airports) I have everything in FSX maxed out all the time bar water which i have set at 2x high. I use ASE, ORBX and GEX.I notice you have a slightly lower CPU speed. I'm afraid that with FSX, for the most part, and when all is maxed, it is a bigger CPU that will give you consistently higher frame rates. I have mine at 4.9 and stable now and it's good. It still has issues though, and tbh, I'm not that into frame rates any more; it's a losing battle lol. it's smoothness I'm after now. If I can have a really smooth flight, relatively low down (I get >60FPS in crz but that's not a good reference point imo) with Ryan's Nvidia Inspector settings at around 30-40FPS I'm happy.Don't get hung up on frame rates; you'll die trying lol JAKE EYREIt's a small step from the sublime to the ridiculous...Napoleon Bonaparte
