Closing of the FLIGHT forum

Me too. I really got tired of the conspiracy theories, especially when it came to AVSIM. Did you hear the one about AVSIM being a website owned by a major aviation company with the goal of taking over the flight simulation world? That was circulating less than a year after we opened our doors, so to speak, in 1997. I still haven't gotten over that (I have a chuckle at least once a month on the stupidity)... But yeah, that stuff finally did me in. I left the Usenet some years ago and haven't been back since...

Insert Dr. Evil laugh (Austin Powers for those who lived under a rock in the 90's)

I took some time away from posting in any forum for a while and came back here because I got back into FSX. I must say I was not prepared for the forum life. I remember now how it was but had forgotten. I posted in the flight forum some positive comments and it was one of the last posts on there. Which is sad. I know some of my posts on other catagories have appeared pompus or negative, however I guess I didn't realize how they were until after I got gang jumped by other posters correcting my comments or making me feel like a total jerk. Which I hope I am not IRL. I must say it's made me think how there are always some people out there that will just hate me not matter what. That DJ guy hated everything about me, not meant to be a personal attack on him just an specific observation. Now I see moderators at work, and I suppose they are in control so if we like it we stay and if we don't we leave, FSX is great no matter what. But I wanted to go back to the original post of this thread. He got made fun of as well. IMHO...I believe he was trying to say he did not agree with the forum closing down and wanted to protest by puplically stating he was going to leave. I wish if someone posts something that appears negative other people would not just bash that person. Rather not respond or try to see what the person is saying and why. I know there are alot of jerks in here and people who just post trash.. but having a negative point of view sometimes is not a bad thing? I mean I hated XP10 demo and got trashed in that forum becuase of it. I did get some good posts in reply but my intention was not to personally attack anyone. I just hope in the future I can post both positive and negative comments about any given situation and would have moderators support as long as I was not degrading or agressive towards another person. Does a negative post violate the rules?

hehe no, don't remember that one, but i do remember a good deal of general paranoia regarding Avsim and FS.com. some of us simmers might need to get outside a little more..
I participated in usenet flightsim groups for years. I finally gave up on them about seven years ago and haven't missed them one bit... :LMAO:Well, I have missed some of the more friendly and colorful folks, some of whom I consider to be close friends.
yes, i remember you well from usenet Fr. Bill !

No, it doesn't break the rules per se. In practice though, it's almost always a case of not what is said, but rather the manner in which it is said that becomes an issue. Over at SimOuthouse, they're promoting a simple concept which frankly could serve here just as well:

Let Being Helpful Be More Important Than Being Right!

I've always considered usenet as the "Wild West" since there has been no moderation at all. Most website forums that're moderated do so reactively, in other words post-facto, rather than pro-actively, simply because the sheer volume of traffic would make pre-moderation a total nightmare.Because of this a single inflammatory post can quickly become the "pebble that started an avalanche" unless there just happens to be a moderator online who can take steps to put brakes on the situation. This of course is why AVSIM provides the "Report" function. This provides a way for anyone to help keep things under control, since it quickly alerts all moderators so they can act more quickly.

I miss "Dallas" and "John Ward" among the many whom I consider(ed) friends.

Yeah, I remember that. In fact it continued to crop up at least once every six months or so... :LMAO:

I found it very entertaining. It was like watching WWF, except the fights were not fake.
MOUHagnagnahahaha.....

I understand that my last topic in the Flight forum may have trigged some very strong feeling and reply from some developers as I was trying to understand why some of them were so upset about Flight, my intention was not to stir the pot.I've been in counceling for the last 5 days now as I am trying to cope with my Fght forum withdraw....not easy....not easy at all, I need some serious help, i guess it would have be easyer and cheaper for me to do like the OP did but.....I just can't make myself quit cold turkey....I'm affraid of Flight forum relapse..I was told (by my therapist) that I will always be a Flight forum addict no matter what and I have to accept it, she (my therapist) is hopefull that I will again be able to read member's post when the forum reopen.....as for me been able to write in it again....she said that I will have to be under her supervivion or a member of her staff before doing so.....I have to take baby steps one day at the time.Wish me luck guys.

I honestly didn't know there was even a Flight forum....Hmm...oh well.

You know what that is a great quote and I agree it seems like most people who were down on my posts just wanted to prove their points and make themselves feel better about themselves and their points rather than say anything positive. I will admit that I may have broken that rule also however I never have said anything negative about a specific person unless I was attacked first.I look forward to Flight even though I won't be playing it as much as FSX and will only purchase California stuff unless its super expensive, then no..

Well, you can start by looking at what they are making me watch to ease my pain.....

Now that I have pretty much vented all my frustrations, I have accepted that I have to go back to FSX on a new overclocked machine, I'm OK with that. So shutting the Flight forum down, and kind of favoring the new Flight fan "boys" as we move on is of little concern to me. I don't see any immediate need for Flight as it is now so why should I care.Frankly, I am looking forward to a new "Ivy" bridge unlocked chip at it's release in April. And overclocking has become extremely simple since everyone has discovered the dollars in that too. Even Intel is one board with that and now sells a "Performance Tuning Protection Plan" for $29, offering a one-time chip replacement for free if you fry the one you have while overclocking it in the first year. It specifically covers out-of-spec. usage. Also places like Cyberpower are giving away the kitchen sink just to sell machines these days. About all these "freebees" are to certify the whole machine for overclocking since everyone is doing that anyway. For me, that is the immediate future. I've even been looking in the Avsim library in preparation of moving on. In fact, I intend to purchase the latest versions of the popular FSX add-ons, rather than live with what I've got. And I already have a lifetime membership with Justin for mesh.I think that is the state of where we are at for a period long enough to justify the new expense. I think Flight will be a start up toy only for quite some time. That's where I will spend my money instead of some pie-in-the-sky "points" based cloud aimed at the kiddie set.Bob - Las Cruces, NM.

Good move making everyone pause and take a step back, I'm always amazed by the human capacity to divide itself into teams and then be intolerant of the other team and forget they have anything in common with them:Hopefully after it's released folks will calm down and then return to flying and treating each other like fellow sim enthusiasts instead of the other tribe.

I was about to write an eloquent post protesting the closure of the FLIGHT forum, and then I took an arrow to the knee after reading a few posts into this thread. Sheesh.

Can't help but notice some editorializing being slipped in under the closed door... ; )
