Originally, used to be run by BA, then services to one of the most remote islands on the UK's Northern outposts was taken over by Loganair, who now run services to Barra Island, the southernmost of the Hebridean Isles chain, on behalf of FlyBe. First time I saw the BA Twin Otter's, I was utterly captivated to see an aircraft taking off from a beach. Being stationed at nearby RAF base at Benbecula, where Navy Buccaneers came for gunnery practice I thought that was the most Northerly I'd ever seen aircraft land at, till I saw the beach landing and take-off.

The Twin Otter has an "intake deflector" on its engine intakes; it's a plastic plate with slots on it, when they are extended, a slot on the back of the engine opens and lets out water and other foreign particles by "inertial separation", preventing them from reaching the gas generator turbine (compressor). It's the propellers which must take the worst part on those landings

Only a few flights per day but minor changes from week to week due to the tide. I've taken the flight once - the contrast between leaving a large-ish international airport (Glasgow) and landing at what must be one of the most primitive commercial "airfields" in Europe about an hour later is really striking. BTW the "apron" which seems to be marked out with seaweed says it all... I guess it was that or sandcastles.
