B737-700 video of RNAV/RNP (0.3) approach into LOWI

Featured Replies

I assume this is the approach being illustrated in the upcoming 2nd tutorial to be released by PMDG -

Nice video. 'Interesting' weather too! Looking forward to shooting this approach once tut #2 comes out.

What's the sound at 12:52 similar to speedbrake deploy? Is it auto-restow?

What causes fog/stratus clouds to accumulate in the valleys like this? Obviously a mass of warm air is being cooled down so that condensation is taking place, but what exactly is happening?
When the dewpoint and temp are identical or very close together..

The weather couldn´t have been more worse.

Fight time: NGX 737-700: 37,0h; -800: 47,2h

They appear relieved when they see the runway!

The weather is not bad at all, smoothest weather to fly in.. It's the same as flying here in the USA on the coasts with a low overcast layer, no biggie..

Tony Fontaine

It's not the weather that's a concern it's the position of the aircraft within that weather that needs to be concerned about.

Seemed like a hard landing?

True, but that's not really the "cause." The convergence of dewpoint and temperature is caused by the geography. The weather in the valley is the result of the effect of the air flow on the leeward side of the mountain, the increasing wind speed (and thus decreasing pressure) create in the valley. In other words, this same air mass wouldn't necessarily create this sort of cloud coverage in an open area. The reduction in air pressure is what increases the saturation.

This type of valley fog is usually caused by a temperature inversion, when the cold heavier air drops and the warmer air passes above the mountains.. Either way, with today's automation and terrain warnings, this approach is not that dangerous since they broke out at 1000 ft and had the approach lights in sight with plenty of visibilty..

would have been nice to see a missed approach in these conditions. They would have a RNP missed approach programmed as well, right ?How do you program these RNP to the FMC? Well i hope the tutorial 2 will explain all this.Great videoMichael Moe
