Got the RV up to 20,000' today - took a while, but gorgeous scenery!

So, no slew mode to cheat - I thought making it to 20,000' was pretty cool - the scenery is lush and the air is thin. . .

Did you feel... light headed at all? <grin>

I milked 22,019 out of the RV.. And yeah. It is slippery up that high.. I was full flaps averaging about 70kts just to maintain some semblance of `flight'.

I have not tried it in the RV, but I became the running gag of a multiplayer session recently, flying the Stearman to 23,000. Took ages. And then up there, I intentionally got it into a SPIN..... all the way down to 2500.Yyyyaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh !!!Landed quickly and needed a break after that.EDIT: aaah what? "I was full flaps" ... I'm no pilot, but that does not seem to be the best way to get to high altitude to me. I gotta try that. Now.

If you have the Mustang you can with some patience and skillful flying top out just over 37,000ft. Makes for an interesting plummet back to earth. :)b93189ea.jpg31g's.. :LMAO:

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I thought full flaps would tend to create to much drag at that altitude for a small aircraft, making it hard to maintain.

Flaps adds lift to your wings. It also adds a lot of drag. In thin air, I can see it helping you climb, but only at a slow speed. Its not something thats used in real life because the drag tends to offset the added lift, and you dont want to fly anything in Flight above 10K without an oxygen tank in the passenger seat.

full flaps on a PA28 is just drag, you dont get any extra lift or lower stall speed, I dont usually use full flap unless I am high, in reality full flap is the last thing you want to do when climbing

In that thin of air I was having a rough time gaining any lift without flaps. To get enough lift to gain altitude at that height would have required a lot of speed which just wasn't achievable in that thin of air. I know it's not typical behavior but it made for a stable accent.. Yes slowly but it helped a lot because I was only averaging 70-75kts w/ dips down to 60-65kts with the slightest twitch of the stick.

Okay, you guys win, I chickened out at 18200 in the RV. Using flaps did not seem to help me, but I did not try many settings. Was flying in "Low and Threatening" weather and did not want to change it as I was hosting a session.
