April 2, 200422 yr I have just been flying in FS2004 all day!I think I have been in the sim for like 8 hours or so...Then on approach to GCTS with all sliders to max I have a warninng that states that I am out of memory and I need to do a disc clean (WIN XP feature)???Then I went to that "secret location" and saw that there was a folder in the FS9 hidden folder, the one with the .cfg file in it, and saw a folder by the name: Scenerycache, Damn I thought! On my XP drive I only have around 500MB free space sometimes it gets WAAAAAY lower, but in total I have around 60-70GB on other drives, where I have installed flightsim...Why ooooh why didn't they choose to include a option to the location of the hidden folder?Any help or knowledge as to if I can relocate it?Boaz...
April 2, 200422 yr Nothing should be written into that folder unless you are loading in scenery from a CD and/or chose the option to cache your scenery. If you installed any scenery on your Hard Drive and chose that option, that's your problem--the cache folder is only there to move 'oft used scenery from slower CD's to faster Hard Drives. Do you recall installing any scenery and choosing that option? If so, you can easily find out which scenery by searching your scenery.cfg for all the lines that start with "remote-" If you find any line with text following remote=, then MSFS is trying to cache that scenery and in essence, is both wasting space on your HD and reducing performance, since it's taking data already on your HD and moving it again.Really, before you even worry--did the folder have anything in it? If not, it's likely your disk wasn't full at all and you were out of real memory. That's quite possible if you were flying with maxed autogen and had never tweaked the default xml file to rid MSFS of things like the autogen fast food stands, etc.... It was found that those objects caused a memory leak of sorts.Last thing that can cause such an error is a bad scenery file. They can "blow up" in such a way that they cause MSFS to report an out of memory error, although that usually happens at sim startup when MSFS tries to build indexes for newly installed scenery.-John
April 2, 200422 yr Do a full install of Fs2004 so it does not cache scenery. Also, consider moving your swap file to one of the drives with more space. ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
April 2, 200422 yr Good catch on the swap file--it shouldn't be kept on a partition or drive with so little space...
April 2, 200422 yr Thank you for the quick replies!I have not installed my FS9 with the option of using scenery off the CD, I think it's because I took screenshots, but then why did FS9 exit? Thanks again! And what is swap files? You mean windows? I will format the two partions, I have XP and Win2000 win2000 will go of course and that would give me 9GB instead of the 4,7GB I have for XP...Boaz...
April 2, 200422 yr You can specify where the swap file will go without having to reformat. The swap file is something the O/S uses as a type of "virtual memory". Even if you have a lot of memory, XP and 2000 both require space for the swap file.If you were taking screenshots during the flight, I suspect you were opening other applications to save them. Your out of memory error could be caused by some type of error in the other application. It's likely this thread will be moved into the FS H/W forum for more discussion, especially if you need someone to walk you through making changes to your swap file settings. Better for you to search google for instructions on how to change the settings. -John
April 2, 200422 yr Another thing to check as well as the swap file, is the System Restore options. You may want to limit the amount of HD space that's taken up by the restore points.Cheers,Gosta.http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2betateam.jpg
April 3, 200422 yr Hello,>Then on approach to GCTS with all sliders to max I have a>warninng that states that I am out of memory and I need to do>a disc clean (WIN XP feature)???>Each time I had this error it is due to an Landclass .bgl file mixed with scenery.bgl file associated in a folder with a texture folder.Landclass .bgl files must be in a scenery folder BUT never associated with a texture folder ! otherwise FS9 will "eat" all your memory searching for the texturesWhat I have for USA (as example) :1/ USA Folder 2/ Alaska airports Folder 2A/ scenery folder with all .bgl files 2B/ texture folder with all .bmp, ..... 3/ Alaska Landclass Folder 3A/ scenery folder with all Landclass .bgl files 4/ Alaska Mesh folder 4A/ scenery folder with all mesh .bgl filesand it works!Hope it helps Emile EBBR Z590 Aorus Elite, i9-11900K 3.5Ghz Nvidia RTX 5070, 32 GB Mem, SSD 3 Tera , 3 monitors Win11 Pro X64 LM P3D V6.1 Little Nav Map Hifisim Nvidia 591.44
April 3, 200422 yr How can you add a landclass then if there are no empty texture folder? Also its an installation by Sim-wings that installs the landclass in the scenery folder, this might be the issue...?Boaz...
