April 4, 201214 yr Hi all. Do we all have this mix in Flight? In my profile I have highest alt. in meters, also highest speed (1.347 km/h, not with the Icon!) When checking a/c data, for example, range is in km, not nautical miles. Must be frustrating for someone who downloads the game, new to aviation, and try to figure out how much fuel they need for a job. We can do it. Right? :Nerd: If this is standard in Flight, I hope the dev´s add an option for settings, hate the mix, but love Flight. Goran Goran Arvnell
April 4, 201214 yr Flight uses your Windows localization settings to display the appropriate local units, which is a bad idea and leads to confusion because aviation uses imperial units as the international standard.
April 4, 201214 yr Author Thanks for the info, RoboRay. Now I have to figure out how to get around this..... Any suggestion someone? Goran Arvnell
April 4, 201214 yr The only solution found so far is to change regional settings in Windows. Not a great solution but so far it's the only one.
April 4, 201214 yr The only solution found so far is to change regional settings in Windows. Not a great solution but so far it's the only one. jcboliveira is correct: Only workaround now is to change Windows Language and Locale settings to US-English. Many users pleaded this during and after the beta, so we are waiting for some kind of fix (like a Checkbox) to set preferred measurement units. The way it is now messes up most flight parameters, not to mention aircraft weight, range and fuel. Ramón. Time, is the one thing no one can buy.
April 4, 201214 yr Flight uses your Windows localization settings to display the appropriate local units, which is a bad idea and leads to confusion because aviation uses imperial units as the international standard. Only partially true, aviation uses imperial units for altitude and sometimes for weight (depending on country). The nautical mile and knot used for distance and speed are hardly imperial though (that would be statute mile and miles per hour). Atmospheric pressure is given in inches of Mercury (psi would be Imperial AFAIK) or hPa (SI/metric). So all in all a strange mix. John-Alan Pascoe
April 4, 201214 yr Even more, it is not uncommon to see speed in miles per hour in the US, particularly for older aircraft, and in kilometers per hour in Europe. And altitude can often be called out in meters (metres) in Europe as well. But, clearly, Flight needs a Regional Settings options page, just like FS had. Best regards. April 4, 201214 yr Flight uses your Windows localization settings to display the appropriate local units, which is a bad idea and leads to confusion because aviation uses imperial units as the international standard. Not strictly true! ICAO (and that only covers commercial aviation) only uses a very few imperial measurements. Off the top of my head The only solution found so far is to change regional settings in Windows. Not a great solution but so far it's the only one. An even simpler solution - Why not learn both! Why not learn imperial and metric systems of measurement. Cheers, Roger http://forum.avsim.net/public/styles_images/flags/au.png
April 4, 201214 yr Why not learn both! Why not learn imperial and metric systems of measurement. No problem with that. But all people outside the US or not using US-English language and locale regional settings have a "bugged" program. Aircraft Weight, Fuel, Range, Distances are messed up. If you use FAA and Jeppesen charts you will also need a calculator. (Try it. Set your system to any language and locale to match any country that uses Metric units, then open the fuel window and move the sliders. Aerocache and other user distances are also messed up) Cheers. Ramón. Time, is the one thing no one can buy.
April 4, 201214 yr This has been reported to the Flight Team as something that needs urgent attention. Users should be able to set their own choices for this. It has been reported both as a suggestion for update and also as a bug (since it creates unexpected effects in some missions and reports of over loaded aircraft) Jon ------- Microsoft Flight Sim MVP Airport Design Editor FSDeveloper.com
April 7, 201214 yr Hey, I just noticed that there is a UNITS_OF_MEASURE=0 line under the [PANELS] section of Flight.CFG. Has anyone tried changing that setting to see what happens?
April 8, 201214 yr Author Hmmmm.... Nice, but panels are okay. Great hint anyway. Will check, if possible, where and how Flight "reads" the global settings during installation phase. Maybe there is a way to change global settings in Flight after installation. In that case, no problems with metric stuff mixes. I know that you can configure newer airliners, real ones, to calculate fligt parameters with metric (fuel, weight etc. but speed and distance in nautical). Any ideas where to check? Goran Arvnell
May 9, 201214 yr The only solution found so far is to change regional settings in Windows. Not a great solution but so far it's the only one. Not exactly accurate ... all you need to change is the 'Format:' setting for the keyboard (found in regional and language settings), but you can leave the Location on 'United Kingdom' ...doing this will show all values as Imperial, both on Hud and in Hangar etc. And I use the sliders to change fuel and the range is properly given too.
May 9, 201214 yr This will all be sorted out when the rest of the world stops being contrary and adopts US measurements...
May 9, 201214 yr It was agreed that all over the world the SI System is/will be used. All countries changed, or are still changing the measurement. Even in the USA they are slowly changing to SI (Metric) System. For example Pints: Some bottles that where Pints are now filled with 0,5 Liter only. They just skip the missing 0,068 L. For some reason the aviation standards are the only ones that are not assimilated. Except Europe before WWII and russia up to today. But it will change somewhere in the future. I had a link about the worldwide agreement to introduce that but can`t find it anymore. http://en.wikipedia....System_of_Units
