4.5 ghz Intel i7, But low FPS in FSX....

Featured Replies

I have also an i7 running at 4.4GHz, I get usually 30 fps but when I am in outside view and there are heavy clouds fps decrease to 10-15 fps and I have stutters. In VC is around 30 fps.

I had a look at CPU load (HT off) and average is under 50%. On the other side, GPU load is 99% (GTX 560 Ti at 850MHz).

I use ASE and REX (4096 clouds resolution).

So it seems that in my case the GPU is limiting or affecting the fps.

To run smooth I could probably reduce clouds textures, but I am wondering if by tweaking the fsx.cfg I can solve it, not by reducing the REX clouds texture?

I have a gtx580 and 4096 is also overloading my gpu. What does that tell you? No config is going to solve it.

Same here: I run 2024 and I can still bring the pc to it's knees. There is no magic bullet.

You need to bring the pc's proc and physical memory to the highest stable o/c that you can before you tweak. Then optimize (lean down) the operating system, followed by PMDG's low Inspector settings - and then 'conservatively change' you fsx settings until it's smooth and stable, adding in such things which we know are important, such as HIGHMEMFIX=1, and THEN begin to move the detail up to where we're comfortable that we have done everything that we know about in order to get the highest performance we can. This takes weeks to do, and will change as the technology changes.

I just added FFTF=0.2 to my config (using it now with use_pools=0 and not limiting frames.) It runs much better than expected!! I just landed on sint maarten with the NGX in thunderstorms and it didn't even go below 20fps.

Nice, isn't it! Take 'er down to 0.15 or Squishy: it'll give you so much more headroom.

Will try (was using 0.18 btw).

And those FPS aren't from 4.5+ghz i7.. just 1.8ghz :LMAO:, NGX+REX+fspassenger+flytampa+worldofAI+PFE !

One other thing, nVIDIA releasesd a new beta driver. If you have been running wiht 8xS or 8SQ, now might be the time to try 4xS and turn on the new FXAA. In the PMDG forum I think Tabs mentions FXAA is less of a performance hit so it may help some folks who have been checking this thread.

The new beta driver also supports adaptive Vsync so that may be something to experiment on as well.

Paul, how are you calculating TMB again? I am using 87 as stated in your post at 2:19 on april 8th, just onsure of how u came up with that. I am limiting frames in game at 30. You posts and Kostas are my go to when it comes to making fsx run smooth. Thanks so much for all the work. It is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Aaron

This is the original post about calculating TBM:

http://www.simforums...topic37948.html

There is one moot point though: what happens when you're using 4096 textures, but not really using them? For instance all your tex are 1024, including clouds, but then you load up HQ NGX. Should you be using 4096 as divider or 1024?

And also another big questionable thing is: where does this formula come from? I found no sources, beside that what has been written there.

In the end, as much sense as it makes, I didn't see much performance difference with these settings (I used 1024 divider, although I'm using 4096 in the fsx.cfg). YMMY as always. Worth a try at least.

Thats exactly what I was wondering? Although I am using the lower texture clouds, ie 1024, for faster loading and not as much of a hit compared to the 4096 textures in rex, do I keep my settings at 4096 to allow the NGX to load up in HQ? I have noticed much of a performance hit either when switching but was more so trying to get an understanding of that texture use.

Thanks!

Aaron

Hi Paul J. I was reading through this forum thread on my phone earlier, and as I was struggling very badly with frame rates around Vancouver Plus after recently installing it, I took notice of the remarks at the top of your post here, and decided to give a few of the fsx.cfg values you mentioned a try. I also disabled my hyperthreading and changed the water effects to 2* High. WOW! What a difference it made. I've only tested very briefly, and in fact I didn't test it around Vancouver, but around the ORBX scenery I have installed at Anacortes and Skagit Regional. This was also a very taxing area for my system before, even though I, like the original topic poster, have an Intel i7 overclocked to 4.5GHz, along with a HD Radeon 7970. The performance of FSX after making these few changes in the FSX.cfg file were amazing. I've always been a tinkerer with FSX, and I'm tempted to say that the flight I had earlier was the smoothest and best graphically I've ever had. There were a few random blurries, but I suppose I can fine tune too get rid of those. Overall, though, the textures loaded beatifully, and looked very clear. The most amazing part, and really the reason that I am sharing this with you and others, is that when I opened my FSX.cfg and checked my new ProcSpeed setting, which I had deleted along with PerfBucket to be rebuilt after the changes, the new figure was 17694. Ever since I've had this PC I've been stumped as to why the ProcSpeed was always in the high 9000's, which was actually lower than my older 2.8GHz rig's ProcSpeed. I guess that disabling hyperthreading must have affected this. I also checked out the cpu graph in task manager and core 0 seemed to have plenty of spare room, whereas before I had 8 cores showing basically a straight line across 100%.

Thanks to Paul J and Word Not Allowed, along with others in this thread for sharing their findings.

Cheers,

Scott

OK, Scott & Marcello... :-

Reality! Some of those figures are gone by the wayside, now.... It can get better........see next door, in the DX10 sub-forum, and read some of the successes there....
