April 16, 201214 yr Imagine the confusing that would occur by saying I'm on the 088 radial tracking inbound and having people try to decide if you are flying west at 268 and being physically east of the VOR or be physically west of the VOR and flying in a easterly direction. I would almost imagine that if I were flying east at 088 being west of the VOR and talking to ATC I might be told to contact the tower once I was on the ground... Where possible, I think we should encourage proper procedures and practices, and maybe help someone else learn a bit of airmanship. I fully agree. When you try to educate people (even if they don't know they are being educated), you should do so carefully and with the proper information and terminology. What Ramon posted ("From that point you are at the intersection of inbound radials to MKK 285, LNY 210 and OGG 88") is true but this is NEVER ever the way VORs are used or talked about in real life. An intersection is the point where two or more designated VOR radials cross. You will never hear a pilot say that an intersection is the point where two or more designated VOR bearings cross. Intersections are always described as radials and hence always going FROM the VOR. Sounds perfect. Thanks. It may sound find but it's totally wrong... and that's the problem. Now you will get a lot of people NOT understanding VOR the proper way and using confusing descriptions! As I said an intersection always is and always will be ON the radials and radials will always go FROM the VOR. The radials that MS provided simply do NOT intersect. They can't. Of course people may still find the Aerocache, but that's not the point, or at least that's noy MY point. My point is that there may be thousands of people who think they know how VORs work now while they don't. BTW Every now and then when I want to fly to an intersection I do use the reciprocal of a certain radial in order to get there, depending on my situation in relation with the VORs I use. But even when you use the reciprocal you will name the radials when you want to describe the intersection. Just as when you have to fly inbound on the 270 radial: you will use the reciprocal (90) on the VOR and as a heading, but you still will be saying you are flying on the 270 radial.
April 16, 201214 yr Hi Folks The radials that MS provided simply do NOT intersect. They can't Jeroen - <pedant>They intersect twice.</pedant> ATB Paul ODG Preview
April 16, 201214 yr Well, technically, they DO intersect, somewhere near the Natal Basin off the African coast. Then again when they come back around to Hawaii again. But I think it'd be hard to pick up the VOR from there :).
