FS navigator replacement

Recommended Posts

Hi

After the death of my trusty old computer a new machine is on its way. And with that the whole process of reinstalling everything. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me find my registration/license key for FS Navigator, so may just have to wave that goodbye. To be honest, I only ever really used it for the moving map function. And so to my point - is there anything else out there that can replace FS Nav - mainly for the moving map thing? Payware/Freeware whatever. I don't use the default GPS.

Thanks for any info.

Gavin,

As far as I know FSNavigator has become a freeware application.

So, you can legally use the publicly available registration now.

As for the replacements, there are a few options for the moving map:

- FSCommander (also suitable for flightplanning and showing online traffic) http://www.fscommander.com/

- FSWidgets EFB (also suitable for paperless use of charts)* http://fswidgets.com...?products_id=35

- I guess PlanG also has a moving map and it is freeware http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/planG.htm

* Note: If you care just about the moving map, FSWidgets offer a freeware GMap http://fswidgets.com...nload_files.php

Thanks as ever Rafal. Do you have a link for this public registration please? I'll try Googling it and see what I get.

And indeed Google did the trick. Superb, I'm glad I won't have to buy something new. Though I will probably buy the TOPCAT flight planner when it comes out.

Just wondering if we can legally pass on to you a different registration key. The programme is not being sold commercially for many years and it would hardly be piracy! What is the view of other simmers?

I always keep my FS files and keys backed up on an external drive just in case I get a computer problem. Has saved me on several occasions as after 18 months or so I always seem to get a glitch in the works and need to reinstall my system. Seems to be built in.

I always keep my stuff backed up too. The one thing I've mislaid this time is the FSNav reg key. And nothing else.

Please do NOT send me any reg keys. I do not want them. I do not want anything illegal. I do not want this simple post to turn into a crusade against me for something I have not asked for and do not intend to do.

But thanks for the thought, I know you intended nothing illegal.

Given that you can't buy FSNav any more it would be difficult to prove using someone else's key was denying the author a fee.

But to answer the OP's question I've been using the moving map in FS Flight Keeper for years which is far superior to that in FSNav.

It is commercial software but gives you so much more than the excellent moving map. http://www.flightkeeper.net/default.asp

I was in a similar situation a few years ago when my computer packed in and I had to reinstall FS9 on a new machine. Although I had backed up all the aircraft and scenery addons, I had forgotten to back up FS Navigator and had lost it with the old computer. When I tried to replace it, FSNav was no longer available so I went for what seemed to be the best alternative after researching and reading various reviews and bought FS Commander. I have not regretted that - it will not only give you your moving map display but a lot more in addition if you want to use it to it's full potential. I like it and use it a lot.

In that case find your licence key information will be found in: ..... Flight Simulator 9\Modules\FS Navigator\Bin\Program.cfg . This is a simple text file so the information is clearly readable.

If you have the entire FS Navigator directory backed up, you can copy it across to your new installation in entirety and all your settings and configurations will work "out of the box".
